Jul. 14, 2005 - Tagged Again

I've been tagged again. Here are my answers:

Q.: What is your favoite night-time snack?  Hot cocoa

Q: If you could choose 3 comfort items to take with you for a year on a deserted island, what would they be? (Your husband, children, and your Bible don't count.)
A book, my "blankee" (yes, I have one), and my kitty cat.

Q: Why did you choose each item? I love to read, I like to cuddle, and I like cats. They all comfort me.

Q: What is your first memory? I don't remember much before I was 6. I remember my first grade teacher and how much I loved school.

Weblog: Life before, during, and after homeschooling.

A veteran homeschool mom's journal about life in the "empty nest" and to encourage moms who are currently homeschooling.

• Name: Cindy Downes
• Gender: Female
• Birthday: February 22, 1950 (Age: 55)
• Location: Broken Arrow, OK, United States

About Me
I am married to my wonderful husband, Bill, and have two children, Wil and Shelly, born in 1976 and 1977, respectively. We homeschooled them from K - 12th grade. After they graduated in 1994, I began a homeschool consulting service and helped moms create custom curriculum plans for several years. I also wrote The Checklist, Oklahoma History Online, and created my website, www.oklahomahomeschool.com. I'm now a grandmother, getting ready to celebrate my 35th wedding anniversary in 2005, and enjoying life as an "empty nester!"

Interests
I love to write, read, travel, go on "adventures" with my granddaughter, cook, and meet new homeschool moms.

I was tagged by Spunky, too, but until I read someone else's answer, I didn't know what that meant! Now, I do so here goes my answers.

Q.  The most books I've ever owned:
Believe it or not, I owned over 6,000 books at one time! I'm an avid book collector - mostly children's books. I have traveled over much of the US collecting books. Some were given to me. I volunteered for years at the library used book sales and got 100s of them for 50 cents apiece as a volunteer! I started a homeschool library in my home and ran it for two years before I realized It was more trouble than it was worth. Too many difficulties arising from being in my home. Finally, I had a big yard sale, advertised it to homeschoolers only, and sold off all but 2,000 for $25 to $1.00 apiece. I am now back up to 4,000 - whoops, I didn't realize I had that many. I keep them in a database! So you can see I am addicted to books and they are taking over my house!

Q. The last book I bought: Yesterday, I bought
  • Charlotte Mason Companion by Karen Andreola
  • 100 Top Picks by Cathy Duffy
  • Homeschooling High School by Jeanne Dennis
  • Greenleaf Guide to Ancient Egypt by Cyndy Shearer
  • Trail Guide to U.S. Geography by Cindy Wiggers
  • Exploring the World of Mathematics by John Hudson Tiner
  • Exploring Creation with Botany by Jeannie Fulbright
  • Cheapskates Guide to Branson Missouri
  • Fool's Puzzle by Earlene Fowler.
I try to keep up to date with homeschooling by reading since I am "retired", going on a vacation to Branson later this summer, and enjoy mysteries!

Q. The last book I read:
I usually have three or four books going at a time including listening to tapes in my car - confusing, I know, but it works for me. Here are my current reading projects:
  • Blog On by Todd Stauffer
  • Maine Mutiny (Murder She Wrote)
  • 100 Top Picks by Cathy Duffy
  • Cracking the Millionaire Code by Hansen and Allen (which reminds me, is anyone else reading Cracking the Millionaire's Code?)
Q. The five books that meant the most to me:
  • The Bible (read it for the 1st time at age 30 and totally changed my life)
  • Eternity in their Hearts by Don Richardson (incredible!)
  • Home Grown Kids by Raymond and Dorothy Moore (persuaded me to homeschool when I knew no one else who homeschooled)
  • Philip Yancey's, Where is God When it Hurts (got me through a couple of bad years)
  • Half Time by Bob Buford (gave me a vision for what to do with the rest of my life)
Now I tag 5 people to answer these questions. (Forgive me if you've already been tagged. This gets confusing!)
