Many challenges are upon us Homeschooling Dads in today's world, we all know that. Today I'm thinking of one thing my children and I have in common: the refrain,
"I don't want to!"
Meaning, when we ask our children to do schoolwork, their chores, apologize, most things other than watching TV and eating candy, we often hear, "But I don't want to!"
Of course, there are things I don't want to do either.
I didn't want to get up to go to work today.
I don't want to do the dishes tonight.
I don't want to do my homework, either!
I don't want to make my kids go to bed when I haven't seen them much today.
But, I know I must. So I do.
Our children must. So we must get our children to do.
How do we do it? From my own experience, I know that bad things happen when I choose to do some things I don't want to do. I know that I can cause trouble at my workplace. I know that I can run out of dishes to eat on. I can run out of clothes to wear if I don't do laundry. I can still get bad scores on my schoolwork, too!
Our children have not yet internalized the cause and effect of discipline/lack of. So we must provide it for them.
When they "don't want to!", we must move them along, and teach them that some things must be done.
Then we can enjoy our rest and relaxation.
