Fall Creek Falls
in the Sipsey Wilderness of the Bankhead National Forest
This is about a 5-mile hike. We will walk down the west bank of Borden Creek to the Sipsey River, then up the north bank of the Sipsey to the falls.
Fall Creek Falls is in a lovely box canyon that is a popular destination for hikers and campers. Along the way are many large trees, including Eastern Hemlock and Yellow Poplar, dramatic bluff lines, cliff shelters and huge boulders.
We will return by the same route, unless the water is low enough to cross Borden Creek. If that is the case, we can return up the east bank of Borden, where about forty feet of the trail passes through a natural tunnel.
We should be back to the store by mid-afternoon.
Bring water, snack & lunch. Wear hiking boots or other rugged, comfortable footwear.
Meet: 9:00am at the Warrior Mountain Trading Company store in Wren, AL. The store is just south of Moulton, AL, on AL-33 at its intersection with AL-36.

Veterans Day Parade
November 11, 2009 from 12pm to 3pm
Downtown Birmingham
Calling all Alabama homeschoolers! You are invited to march in the 2009 Veterans Day Parade in downtown Birmingham.
Ronald Weeks of Birmingham, AL, helped set in motion the national observance of all American veterans on Nov 11--now called Veterans Day. Birmingham still hosts the nation's oldest and largest Veterans Day Parade as a tribute to those who made sacrifices to ensure the freedoms we enjoy in this country.
All ages area welcome—little ones can ride in strollers or wagons. All homeschoolers, regardless of cover/church school are invited to join with us in showing our appreciation to America’s Veterans.
We are encouraging everyone to dress in period attire to represent a US Veteran—we hope to have every US War represented. However, if you do not wish to dress in costume, you can still wear blue pants with a red or white shirt to show your patriotism while marching in the parade. We also plan to schedule a few meet times for the kids to help with some of the painting for the float--these times will be announced through the Yahoo Group.
Our theme for this year is “A Heritage of Freedom”. We plan to represent all 5 military branches and hope to put together a time-line banner of US Wars in remembrance of all US Veterans.
Check out this awesome Veterans Day video by Jennifer Love Hewitt about Veterans Day and why we honor America's veterans.
If interested, please sign up at theYahoo Group or contact Briana at self-educated@earthlink.net

Location: Bass Pro Shops in Leeds, AL
All Ages!!!
Event Description: Hey, guys. I contacted the Bass Pro Shops about scheduling an aquarium behind-the-scenes tour, and the activities coordinator was more than willing to schedule a whole activity program for us. He said he will have at least 3-4 activities for the group to rotate through, which will include the aquarium tour, an intro. archery class, and maybe something on camping.
We can plan to have lunch when we're done--either purchase lunch there at the "deli" or bring your own picnic lunch. Weather permitting, there is a nice grassy area behind the store where we can do a picnic, and I believe they have some short walking trails for anyone interested in a walk after lunch.
This is a limited number fieldtrip and sign-up will be taken on a "first come, first serve" basis. Due to past experiences with free fieldtrips, I am requiring a $5.00 deposit to sign-up. The $5 deposit will be returned to you in cash when you arrive at the Bass Pro Shops fieldtrip.

Anne of Green Gables
Shoals Theater in Florence
9:00 a.m.
$5.00 per person
Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, unmarried middle-aged siblings who live together at Green Gables, a farm in the town of Avonlea, on Prince Edward Island, decide to adopt a boy from an orphan asylum in Nova Scotia as a helper on their farm. Through a series of mishaps, the person who ends up under their roof is a precocious girl of eleven named Anne Shirley. Anne is bright and quick, eager to please and talkative, but dissatisfied with her name, her pale countenance dotted with freckles, and with her long braids of red hair. Although wishing she was named Cordelia, she insists that if you are to call her Anne, it must be spelt with an 'E', as it is "so much more distinguished." Being a child of imagination, however, Anne takes much joy in life, and adapts quickly, thriving in the environment of Prince Edward Island. She is something of a chatterbox, and drives the prim, duty-driven Marilla to distraction, although shy Matthew falls for her immediately. Come see a play about the adventures of Anne.
Deadline for sign up, cancellation and payment is November 5th. Please email Jae White with how many will be attending, and she will give you an address to send the money.

Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge
Givens Interpretive Center
Time TBA
Wheeler NWR, located along the Tennessee River between Huntsville and Decatur, was established in 1938 to provide habitat for wintering and migrating birds. Considered the easternmost Refuge in the Mississippi flyway, this 35,000 acre Refuge attracts thousands of wintering waterfowl each year and supports the southernmost and Alabama's only significant concentration of wintering Southern James Bay Canada geese. It also serves as winter habitat for the State's largest duck population. In addition to migratory birds, the Refuge hosts 115 species of fish, 74 species of reptiles and amphibians, 47 species of mammals, and 285 different species of songbirds. The Refuge is also home to 10 federally listed endangered or threatened species.
The Givens Interpretive Center includes a Wildlife Observation Building, which offers a large, glass-enclosed room with bleachers and spotting scopes for viewing waterfowl and wading birds in the observation pond. November-February is the peak time for waterfowl viewing. The building overlooks a Backyard Wildlife Habitat Area complete with a waterfall which is maintained to attract songbirds, hummingbirds, butterflies, and other wildlife. Many species of birds are frequently visible here.
We will also take a nature walk on the Atkeson Cypress Trail, which begins with a 330 foot section of boardwalk through a cypress swamp. A variety of wildlife inhabits the area surrounding this 1/2 mile trail.
Bring water, snacks and a picnic lunch. Wear comfortable shoes.
