Jun. 17, 2006 - Humans and Habits
If there is one thing that humans have in common, it is habits. Good habits, bad habits, we can't help it. Humans are habitual creatures. There is something we can do though. We should know why good habits are important, how to form good habits, and how to dispose of the bad.
Having good habits is incredibly important for keeping yourself and your family healthy, safe, and happy.
You often hear your dentist telling you to get into the habit of brushing your teeth. Why? It keeps us healthy. Get in the habit of being clean and well-groomed. It is important!
Every night one of my parents goes around and makes sure that all of the doors are locked. It is something they do to make sure that we all stay safe. It is a good habit they have.
Finally, good habits are important because they can keep your family happy. Putting things away properly, and doing your chores promptly and without complaint are both ways to do this.
Well, now you know why good habits are a big part of every day, but how do I put good habits into practice?
First, decide something you want to work on. You can choose something as simple as closing the curtains each night. If you need to, post a sticky note on your bed, or somewhere where you will see it. If you can close the blinds for 10 days, then you will probably be able to do it without reminder.
Ridding yourself of bad habits is much more difficult than creating new ones. There are two ways to go about it.
It generally takes about 30 days to stop a bad habit. Try not to do whatever it is for that amount of time.(i.e. biting your nails, or complaining)
Another way is to pick an opposite good habit to combat the bad one. I have a problem picking at my finger nails while listening to my Mom read stories to us. Instead of doing that though, I try to do something constructive. I can choose from crocheting, drawing or folding clothes. It keeps my hands busy.
When choosing a good habit to fight a bad one, you have to choose something that directly ministers to the problem. One that forces the bad habit out of exisitence.
I hope this has been helpful. I couldn't find any scripture about habits. I do think that God approves of forming good habits, and is glad when the bad are broken.
I do have a wonderful promise to leave you with:
Isaiah 41:13
For I the Lord your God,
will hold your right hand,
Saying to you, "Fear not, I will
help you."

great post and great advice. It is tricky to give up bad habits. I have a few I need to deal with, maybe now is the time.
