Apr. 17, 2008 - It's a Beautiful Mornin'!

Posted in Having Fun!

Well, today is absolutely gorgeous!  The sun is bright and warm, making the day 75°.  It feels so strange to go outside and have no thought of putting on even a light sweater!

As I am writing this, both of my brothers are outside playing in the golden day, and my sister is riding horses with our neighbor.  I was just outside as well, reading my science book on the porch swing, letting the sun's rays envelope me with warmth.

This day also keeps reminding me that planting time is at hand!  We have tried big gardens before, but our thumbs are just not green enough to make them thrive.   Yet every year my sister and I get the urge to plant, and grow.  This year, I am going for a much smaller garden.

I have decided to try and grow an herb garden, so that we can put fresh herbs in our meals.  One of those herbs is Cilantro, my mother's absolute most favorite.  Mmm!  Another is not one that we plan on eating ourselves, but I am sure that our cats will enjoy Cat Nip.  I also plan on growing Parsley and Basil.  Those are the herbs.

For big stuff, I am going to try Pumpkins and Red Sun Sunflowers.  I have tried to grow pumpkins for at least three years.  (Not three years in a row!)  The farthest they ever got was to the flowering stage.  That was really disappointing, considering that we had wanted to try and milk-feed our pumpkins like Almonzo in Farmer Boy.  Those other years, I tried to grow the biggest species of pumpkin, hoping that with milk-feeding, I could grow a colossal pumpkin!  This year, however, I am lowering my goal slightly and settling for Conneticut Field Pumpkins, which, the package says, are great for carving and baking.  Precisely what we want!

The Sunflowers were kind of an afterthought.  When I was looking at seeds at the store, I glanced over the flowers, thinking I might want some of them, too.  Sunflowers looked good, and I knew just where I would plant them!  Wouldn't a row of sunflowers up the gravel driveway be such a cheery welcome?  So, looking throught the sunflowers, my eyes caught sight of big, bright, and beautiful RED ones!  Red is one of my favorite colors, and red sunflowers, automatically caught my fancy.

The sun is still just as bright and inviting, so I think I will go back outside and finish some school on the porch swing.  Have any of you reached 75° or more, yet?

Just reading your post makes me wish I could hop over there and join Bluejane ;-). But then, sitting on the porch swing sounds nice as well... *sigh*

Yes, we've hit 75, and more! Texas winters don't last all that long :-).

Your garden sounds both lovely and practical! I've never had my own little garden, but that does sound fun. I actually do enjoy weeding on occasion (I'm not a very outdoorsy person, but when I DO have to be outside, I don't mind weeding.)

I don't think we've quite hit 75 around here yet. It's been a VERY slow thaw. We got hit hard this winter--but I think almost everybody did.

So glad the warm weather came up your way! I am very jealous of Bluejane. I want to go horseback riding!

Today is pretty cool, but yesterday I think was like 80'! I was so happy. This week has been gorgeous!

Hope your herbs grow well! I am sure we will be doing the garden soon too!

Prayers and Blessings,
Miss Amanda

Goodness I wish I could have a garden! Our backyard is in the middle of a makeover though so no gardens yet. :( That is a good idea to start small. Herbs would be cool to grow. :)

75 sounds so nice! It hasn't gotten to 75 here yet. Right now we are happy when the temp. reaches 60, lol.

Lovely, cherry post! It's in the 70s here, which is just heavenly! I'd love to go ride a horse. That is so fun to hear that BlueJane is able to do that!

I am so glad you'll be growing own herb garden! How fun. I love watching things grow that I've spent the time to care for.

I hope you will post pictures when things start sprouting!

I am so impressed with your desire for a garden. I also love sunflowers (especially the large ones) and always enjoy the American Goldfinches that come to feed on the seeds when they ripen. Hope you do well with your pumpkins too. We had a pumpkin vine come up wild on the edge of our compost pile last summer and even got a nice size pumpkin from it! Hope you have fun! Blessings, Julie

Apr. 22, 2008 - hello . . .

Hello Dear Eyebright,

It's been wonderful weather here too! The only yucky day in the past few days was Saturday, and we were actually at a homeschool convention in Indianapolis.

That's so funny that you're planning on a smaller garden this year. We are too - we always plan far larger than what we can truly handle. We have a flower section, and an herb section. I really enjoy going out in the garden and picking the herbs. Probably my favorite is mint - but it overtakes a garden in less than three years. So, I think we got rid of it. :)

We've always thought it would be a neat idea to grow pumpkins - and milk feed them because that's how Almonzo did it in Farmer Boy. Wow, that's just humorous, our families have quite a bit in common. :)

Sunflowers are very cheery, I'm sure they'd look lovely along a gravel driveway!

I'll post more pictures of my new purse sometime soon. ;)

Blessings!

Yes, we are enjoying the warm weather here as well. It feels so good to be out of winter! But sometimes you never know if spring is here yet, since we sometimes get spring blizzards.

Blessings,
Kylie

P.S. - I hope your gardening endeavor goes well. We have never tried to plant herbs or vegetables, although we have occasionally planted flowers.

Apr. 25, 2008 - Weather

Hi Eyebright!

Sounds like you had a beau-tiful day! Our mornings have been so fresh and crisp; our Autum's coming on. Its been great weather! Estamating, the weather would be 30 degrees (not by American measures) but it will continue going up to about 45 degrees! Except in July - brr - it goes down to 18 degrees.

Can I please 'have' your 'animated' blog button and its code?

Have a great day today!

Love Jess
