Jun. 5, 2009 - Summer Reading Program

I got the idea from The Rebelution to not waste my time this summer by reading piddly books on pretty much nothing.  Okay, so I don't exactly do that, but I do read quite a few books that do not stretch me in any direction.  So, this summer, I have decided to really stretch myself, and have chosen 25 books that I think will help me do this.
  1. Till We Have Faces ~ C.S. Lewis
  2. Foxe's Christian Martyrs of the World
  3. Hamlet ~ William Shakespeare
  4. A Midsummer Night's Dream ~ William Shakespeare
  5. The Good Earth ~ Pearl S. Buck
  6. North and South ~ Elizabeth Gaskell
  7. King Solomon's Mines ~ H. Rider Haggard
  8. So Much More ~ Anna Sophia & Elizabeth Botkin
  9. An Experiment in Criticism ~ C.S. Lewis
  10. Gone With the Wind ~ Margaret Mitchell
  11. Before You Meet Prince Charming ~ Sarah Mally
  12. Answers to Tough Questions ~ Josh McDowell
  13. Eats, Shoots & Leaves ~ Lynne Truss
  14. From Playpen to Podium ~ Jeff Myers
  15. Millstones & Stumbling Blocks ~ Bradley Heath
  16. 70x7 and Beyond ~ Monty Christiansen
  17. An Urgent Call to a Serious Faith ~ Dave Hunt
  18. Harmony at Home ~ Tim Fisher
  19. Can Man Live Without God ~ Ravi Zacharias
  20. The Seduction of Christianity ~ Dave Hunt & T.A. McMahon
  21. Beyond Seduction ~ Dave Hunt
  22. The Importance of Being Earnest ~ Oscar Wilde
  23. How to Read a Book ~ Mortimer J. Adler & Charles Can Doren
  24. John G. Paton
  25. Jane Austen and Her Times ~ G. E. Mitton
I also plan on posting a review on each book I read, which will probably lead to more posts on various themes and topics.  This whole idea has really excited me.  I am not even going to read the books that I picked up from the library yesterday, I am so excited.

I hope this got you excited as well.  I would really encourage you to not waste your reading time this summer, and to create a list of worthwhile books to read.  If you do, please, please, PLEASE, share it with me!  I would love to know what you are reading, what you thought of each book.  That way, I can get more book titles for me to read!

So, if you create your own "Summer Reading Program", sign the Mr. Linky, and link to your list, so we can all benefit from each other.

I've read Till We Have Faces - and it is so good! One of my favorites.
And all of these photos and illustrations on your blog are so cute!

Thank you for your sweet comment. I look forward to using this time wisely. I used to be afraid that once I graduated, I would lose all sense of time and organization and never accomplish anything! Thankfully, the Lord has been helping me through the first week. ;)

Blessings,
-Breezy

I also have a whole host of books I'll be reading this summer, though I don't have the list together yet.

So, after you graduated and late summer/fall rolled around, was it strange not doing "book work"?

Oh, isn't reading simply wonderful! I did not read as much this Spring as I would've liked to. But, I'm not going to let this summer get away from me! I plan to read several books, and I just might compile a list and post it. :)

Thank you for sharing your book list! One day I hope to read How to Read a Book, it's on one of our (many) shelves of books. So Much More is a wonderful book, they are such sweet young ladies!

Joyfully in Christ,
Miss Emily Rose

Dear Miss Eyebright,

Great idea! I, too, look forward to reading good, thought-provoking books this summer. I think I may post my "list" on my blog. Before You Meet Prince Charming is a wonderful choice :); I enjoyed it.

Would you like to be friends?

I'm Alyssa L. from Oregon (I was in one of Mrs. Novak's chats/workshops).

Your sister in Christ,
Alyssa

What a great idea! Looks like you're a C.S.Lewis fan, me too. #2 is a very moving and convicting book, I've read it also.
Enjoy your literary pursuits, you definitely have some meaty material listed there. I'll be checking back over from time to time to read your summaries.
Have a great week,
blessings, Julie

Oh, my! I'm so behind on my comments!

First of all, those books sound like really good ones. I've read about half of "So Much More". It definately makes you think! We do school through the summer so I don't get that much time to read, unfortunately.

Yes, I love the Eden String Quartet! I can't wait to be able to play like them.

Thanks for commenting! Have a great week!
Emily
