A Peculiar People

Jul. 28, 2009 - New Nicknames

Jacob is laying on the floor in the living room playing with the Risk game.  (I believe he is humming and singing the song/music from Mario Smash Brothers as well.)  I walked out to the kitchen and yelled out to him, "Hey there Pookie Wookie!"

He replied, "Hi there, Mommy Mo Mo!"

I guess I should be glad it isn't Mommy Moo Moo.

I believe I would have to take that personally.

Jul. 27, 2009 - Husbands

Jackie and I were folding laundry this morning and she commented on how small Hannah shorts looked held up next to her.  The shorts used to be Jackie's and she was commenting on how much she has grown.  She started asking me about what I was like at her age.  What things did I do?  What did I play with?  Did I have any brothers or sisters still living at home?  I answered those and then casually mentioned that at her age I still hadn't met their dad yet.  Her next question was "Did you think about what kind of guy you wanted to marry one day?"

WHOA!!

Where did this come from?

Like a good mother I asked her why?  Are thinking about what kind of guy you'd like to marry someday?

She said, "NO! ...  Not really.  Just someone like dad."

Jul. 13, 2009 - A Joel Funny

We went out for ice cream after church last night and the boys were having a little trouble settling down for bed.  So Jason began telling the boys a bedtime story.

It's about Commander Joel and his trusty sidekick Mouseman Jacob.  They are traveling through the dangerous forest around FlemingLand and encountering all sorts of strange creatures, facing challenges and fighting battles.  You know, your typical boy story.

The boys kept bouncing around and acting out the scenes as Jason described them.  Finally, he looked at the boys and told them to settle down and climb into bed.

"This story is to help you stay quiet.  Just lay down and let your imagination run wild."

Joel looked at him and replied, "But I'm already running wild!"

Jun. 15, 2009 - In My Son's Eyes

I love this boy!  Jacob is (still) in the stage where he LOVES me.  Throughout the day he'll just pop in to give me a hug, blow me a kiss across the room, shout out that he loves me.  It melts my heart and I wish I could bottle these days forever.  It's way too easy to forget all these sweet, beautiful, tender moments.  Here is one I don't want to forget...

I came down to the kitchen on Saturday morning, still half asleep.  My hair was probably running amok on the top of my head and I'm sure my face was still creased by the pillow I rest my head upon each night.  Jacob came running up to me and embraced me in one of his famous bear hugs, looking up at me with admiration and pure love in his eyes.  He hugged me and blew a kiss up to my face.  My heart melted.  I walked out of the kitchen and went to sit in my chair while I finished waking up.  As I sat down, Jacob walked over to Jason and asked, "Daddy, how come Mommy is just so beautiful?"  Being the smart man he is, Jason answered, "That's just the way God made her."  Jacob skipped off and replied "I'm so glad."  Jas caught my eye again and winked saying "I am too."

My boys...I love them.

Mar. 6, 2009 - The Joy of Boys

Ah, the joy of raising boys.

They really are a different creature unto themselves.  You see, today we are enjoying a warm, sunny afternoon.  The kids and I have been outside for at least 2 hours.  They've been riding scooters, trying to fly a kite, and then they asked to get out the water guns.  The water guns were actually Hannah's idea, so girls can be pretty creative themselves.  She wanted to use them to "paint" on the driveway...

The boys had other things in mind.

I came inside to work in the kitchen, and I decided to open a few of the windows to let in some fresh air.  The kids stayed outside and played nicely for about 20 minutes...and things deteriorated.  It started with Hannah coming inside and saying that Jacob had gotten her wet.  She went upstairs to change her clothes.  Then Jacob came inside, sat in a chair by the window, and proceeded to whine tell me that Joel had gotten him wet.  While trying to patiently listen and explain to him that we shouldn't be spraying each other (it's not THAT warm), I noticed Joel sneak by outside.

Next thing I know, Jacob is howling!

It was a sneak attack...through the window!

Right in the face.  It was a great shot actually.

Where do they come up with this stuff?!

And, more importantly, how does a mom not laugh hysterically at the cleverness of it?
