by Barnum Software
For the TOS Crew review, our family received the Deluxe version of Quarter Mile Math. It is a computer software- math practice game which is self- competitive, extremely motivating and tracks your scores over time.
The deluxe version that we received came with a CD-rom that can be loaded to multiple computers, and even copied to take to other family member homes. It also interlinks to the Barnum Software site which allows it track scores over time. This works best with high-speed internet which is continuously connected to the internet. Otherwise, both the deluxe version and the standard version offer the same high quality computer programming.
Other features of the Deluxe version is that it has more studnet progress tracking features 323 topics and over 70,000 problems. Topics are kindergarten through 9th grade.
The student then sets up their own "race" account. during a race, your dragster or wild riderless race horse is always in the far lane. The player then chooses the topic that they are interested in As you answer problems correctly, your horse or car races along every time you answer a problem correctly, your car or horse races ahead faster at a pre-determined speed. Your goal is to answer as many problems as possible during the race. The faster you can answer your problems, the sooner your horse or dragster will finish the race. A correct answer causes another problem to immediately appear on the screen. An incorrect answer will remain on the screen for a few seconds before it disappears. You have to wait for it to disappear before attempting to answer the problem again. Incorrect answers do not slow down a horse or dragster. The horse or dragster simply won't accelerate. If you get a problem wrong three times, the program will give you the correct answer. Once that answer disappears, you'll need to type it in yourself before you are given the next problem.
Your score for each race is the number of seconds it took you to reach the finish line. It is called your "elapse time" and you'll see it in the lane that car was in. Every time you finish in the top five, that dragster or horse and its race are recorded by the program. The next time you race, that recorded race will appear as one of your competitors in on eo fhte five lanes to the right of your lane. And so your horse or car is always in the left hand lane. And your previous best five races are always in the lanes to the right. That's your competition.
The object of the game is to improve your elapsed times by answering the problems faster and faster. Your top five average elapsed time is the method by which you can track your progres and/or compete against others that topic.
My Thoughts:
I have loved using this software in our home. Elizabeth(8) has remained weak in her addition/subtraction math facts despite numerous worksheets and flashcard drills. She has been using Quarter Mile Math for 3 weeks and her recall has greatly improved. I've been quizzing her throughout the day and she truly has better recall. Elizabeth loves computer games and this is perfect for her, today she began playing and proclaimed "Let's Race". I've raced on it trying to improve my easy algebra equation responses and Jennifer has raced using the typing topic. I love the positive reinforcement that the games provides. Plus it is just plain fun, easy to install and easier on the pocketbook. Lastly, they have great customer support and offer monthly email tips to keep you up to date on how to best use this software.
I give this product an A because
~the product is easy to install and use
~ has the ability to be used by multiple learners,
~ is affordable
~engages the child while they are learning
~is promoting mastery of the topics covered
