May. 7, 2008 - what's wrong with Rosie?
Posted in Dogs

our Newf, Rosie, has been having this chronic skin problem, and it was getting worse all the time.  We took her in April to the vet (again) to get a second opinion.  Dad is convinced it is some kind of mange or mites, but it doesn't exactly fit the description. The first vet said probably allergies, which is what we think.  The second vet says the same, but says that the treatment she would prescribe  for mites is Revolution, which is what we had given her from the first vet visit.  We first  tried really expensive allergy food, but there is no hope in keeping her diet totally clean. (She stole half a loaf of homemade bread last week)  Now we have her on Pacific salmon food and she has grown back her fur coat, but she is still getting scabby.  Course she is overdue for a bath in the most expensive shampoo ever sold (sigh).   The last treatment included antibiotics (over $100), anti fungal, ear drops, revolution, comfortis (oral for fleas because she is allergic to the bites), and the shampoo.

But she is doing so much better now, so I am glad, but poor.

Jun. 11, 2008 - Coconut Oil
Posted by kathryn777
You may think this is strange...Coconut oil has so many healing properties and I found some have even used it on their pets. I buy extra virgin raw coconut oil for cooking and for body oil for the entire family which has helped skin issues for us. Here is what one said concerning pets and the oil:

And the message does not stop there. A recent television program claimed that the best remedy for brown, fungal toenails was to rub them in coconut oil (don’t use the expensive, organic, virgin oil for this but rather the cheaper ordinary coconut oil). And for a dog or cat with dry, itchy skin and skin allergies try a combination of rubbing some oil on the skin as well as feeding the animal a spoon or two every day.

Coconut oil is reported to have greatly helped dogs with “wobblers” disease, cysts, skin rashes, dry skin and allergies, degenerated body condition, overweight, coat condition, insect stings and bites, improved energy levels and helped thyroid conditions.

For cats it not only helps to keep the coat in soft, shiny condition but also helps to remedy furballs and to keep them (and the nasty cough associated with them) away. Horses also benefit from a daily intake of coconut oil. The coat becomes shiny, the energy levels rise and the horse develops great stamina levels for racing.

In Pacific countries coconut oil has long been used as an antiviral and antibacterial topical agent, and is rubbed on cuts and bruises, allergies and skin complaints.

A very recent discovery claims that virgin coconut oil offers new hope for the many people and their pets who suffer from low thyroid function. The oil stabilizes their hormone imbalances, their moods and their energy levels and even helps with weight reduction, mental confusion, depression and muscle tone.

Coconut oil is a saturated fat made up primarily of medium chain fatty acids, medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), which increase metabolism and promote weight loss. Coconut oil can also raise body temperatures to also increase metabolism. This is good news for people with low thyroid function.

So I would urge people to go out and try coconut oil in place of every other oily or fatty product they have used for both themselves and their pets. And I would love to hear about the results, especially if your dog has felt some benefit. If it is as good as reports claim, the least we can do is spread the word. - EP

I wouldn't hurt to give it a try and it's certainly less expensive while being perfectly harmless and side effect free.
Every blessing,
Kathryn
