Feathered And Furred
Nov. 10, 2008 - Retraining Rosie
We have been working with Rosie with positive reinforcement from coming when called. She had gotten very bad at this in a variety of ways. Positive reinforcement works WONDERS!
We call her and when she comes, she gets a treat and lots of petting and love. Next time, she comes quicker. More of the same. Etc. Etc. Now you have her attention for other training as well. She is pretty hard headed so we need to use as many tools for training as we can.
We also started using a nose collar which allows Kiera to take her out of the yard for walks.

Jul. 28, 2008 - Update on Rosie
She is now back to her beautiful and tremendously furry self (but currently needing a good brush and bath). She is full of vitality and stubborness and playfulness (with Boo).

Jun. 14, 2008 - BOO-dles, the captive
I have been meaning to write about this as it has been a pretty big thing here since we moved into this house in April. Our little Corgi mix, just couldn't stay put in the yard. Never mind that it is completed fenced two and a half acres. He just had to go bug the neighbor, ie. chase her cat, spook her horses and ** in her yard....
So we received a very curt letter in our mailbox from the niebor, who was the one who brought us eggs and a welcome upon our move in. Good idea to check out your nearest neighbors, I should think, anyway.
So, we have been keeping Mr. Boo on a leash at all times. Being the flying and fast moving herding type he is, this has him pretty depressed at times. Still, twice he pushed through the fence that borders Hwy 1, and that just was scarey. He went to visit the dog on the other side. So, poor captive, he went from 20 acres of freedom to being tied up indoors, except when we take him out. Sad. |

Jun. 14, 2008 - Rosie Update - thoughts on coconut oil, and other ideas
Coconut Oil, Flax Oil, Yucca, and Bag Balm - Things to try
Thanks! for posting the ideas here... I never thought of coconut oil, and I have a bunch of it from when I was using it for Toby then I have just gotten busy and keep forgetting to use it, except for scooping out a spoonful now and then to eat : )
I also like the idea I was emailed about yucca, and will do some more research on that. Bag balm is always a good standby to try, but I have none. We were putting flax oil in her food before we moved but I haven't gotten back to that. Flax oil has awesome properties worth posting as well, if I can find a superior article like the coconut oil one.
I am going to go write myself a note right now! In the meantime, at least she has all her fur back and is looking pretty good. |

May. 7, 2008 - what's wrong with Rosie?
our Newf, Rosie, has been having this chronic skin problem, and it was getting worse all the time. We took her in April to the vet (again) to get a second opinion. Dad is convinced it is some kind of mange or mites, but it doesn't exactly fit the description. The first vet said probably allergies, which is what we think. The second vet says the same, but says that the treatment she would prescribe for mites is Revolution, which is what we had given her from the first vet visit. We first tried really expensive allergy food, but there is no hope in keeping her diet totally clean. (She stole half a loaf of homemade bread last week) Now we have her on Pacific salmon food and she has grown back her fur coat, but she is still getting scabby. Course she is overdue for a bath in the most expensive shampoo ever sold (sigh). The last treatment included antibiotics (over $100), anti fungal, ear drops, revolution, comfortis (oral for fleas because she is allergic to the bites), and the shampoo.
But she is doing so much better now, so I am glad, but poor. |
