Gardening et al

I have been trying to put all of my garden up and teach my children at the same time. This has been disastrous. I have too much on my plate and it comes out as anxiety, irritability, and even strife. These are all sins and I have confessed them to God and my children.
I should have listened to my very Godly friend when she told me "put up the garden first and do not even start the garden until you are done". I could have had the garden put up weeks ago but , oh no! I had to be under my own condemnation that my children needed to start when every one else does..should have read more on the Sonlight site with more conviction...Way up in "the county" where potatoes are a way of life, no one even goes to public schools until the crops are all in. So, this week (well the latter half) I am not doing anything with the dc except review and listening to them read. No reading or teaching on my part except to help with math. And so you can just imagine what the house looks likebut I will get that caught up soon... the dc can help later.
Thank you God for your  help! I praise Your Name! Thank you Jesus!

Nov. 4, 2005 - Hello!
One thing I've come to learn is NOT to discount the things about home for schooling purposes...We "school" year round - meaning we just blend it into our days, and no one really notices it! But by your kids being with you (helping I hope) while you plant, harvest, store, and put up your garden..they ARE learning valuable things to learn. Take it from someone who didn't! Maybe because I'm learning it now with my kids, I see it more as learning. But it really is. I think with the way that society looks at "just" a Mom, we really start to internally devalue the things we do in that role. I does not all come naturally, and there is a lot of valuable information/knowledge to be shared (taught) in that role.
Gardening could be -home ec/home and careers
Stabalizing the soil - definately science.
Doing it organically, enviromental science ;)
Garden design and planning involves Math as does trying to figure out how many of each plant.
Kids can keep a garden journal, plant a small section for themselves, or be 'responsible' for a certain crop.
Canning is Home Ec/Home and Careers, science, and health fits in there too...
If it's a flower garden, pressing flowers, identifying them, collecting seeds to store for next years garden (veg. or flower).
I could go on (and on, I'm afraid) but I just wanted to help you see all you have to offer with what you are doing. I do that too, look so much at what I'm "not" doing *or how* that I forget to notice what I *am* doing.

Nov. 8, 2005 - We are canning together
Dear Brookside Academy,
Thank you so much for your wealth of information. I have a df (dear friend) who has been trying to tell me this but "I need to stay on the Sonlight schedule". My dc need to know how important and loved they are and I think the stresses of trying to "do it all" have gotten in the way...so, yesterday, we canned beets together...today we are pickling the rest......I think they really had fun...and through it, we had home ec, math, and listening skills...God is helping me to brake out of my box that I've made........
Thanks so much,
Finding Grace
