SS American Victory Education Programs Provide `Hands-On History' for
Students of All Ages The SS American Victory's Education Program
launches its fourth year as Tampa Bay area youngsters settle into the
2006-2007 school term. The ship's unique educational programs bring
history to life for students in an unparalleled fashion aboard an
authentic, working World War II era merchant cargo vessel. The
programs enhance elementary, middle or high school students'
knowledge of American and world history and social studies themes.
Themes and topics that can be presented include Florida and Tampa Bay
maritime history, local geographical, economic and cultural
characteristics that have made the region and state important players
in global economics, Cold War era political, economic and social
conditions that shaped modern-day America and the critical role
played by women, minorities and other groups on the home front during
World War II. American Victory educational program content coincides
with Florida Sunshine State Standards for social studies curricula
and can be tailored to fit lesson plans. Pre- and post-visit material
is available to plan for and reinforce a shipboard educational
experience. Program details are available by visiting
www.americanvictory .org and using the `Education' link on the home
page, by calling Tom Ringate, (813) 228-8766 or by email:
educator@americanvi ctory.org In addition, special interactive
activities can also be developed, allowing young learners to
experience what it was like to live and work aboard a merchant cargo
ship which served during America's wars. Docent-led Restoration Tours
for organizations of any type and individual self-guided tours are
also offered. The ship is open Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10 AM- 5 PM and
Sundays, 12 Noon - 5 PM (last tours begin at 4 PM). If planning a
visit, visitors should check the ship's availability by calling (813)
228-8766, as the schedule can change. The ship is berthed at 705
Channelside Drive in Tampa's Channelside District, adjacent to the
Florida Aquarium. Parking is available in the Florida Aquarium
Parking Lot. Plenty of seating is available on board for students or
groups to enjoy brown-bag lunches. A ship of the famous Victory Class
of cargo vessel launched in June 1945, the American Victory served
during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars, carrying `guns,
gear, grub and gas' to GIs. Following World War II, she carried food,
clothing and machinery to war-ravaged European countries for the
Untied Nations. Since opening in April 2000, thousands of visitors
have viewed the on-going restoration of the American Victory into a
world-class museum and cruising ship through education programs,
Restoration Tours, holiday celebrations and other activities. And,
more than 2,000 passengers have enjoyed day cruises on Tampa Bay. on
five `ReLive History' cruises. The ship has hosted scores of social
events, military unit reunions, concerts and other events.
