Homeschool Day

HOMESCHOOL DAY

On Thursday, November 6, 2008 , from 10am to 4pm , the Ponce Inlet
Lighthouse will present its fall Homeschool Day. This is a day of
educational and fun activities designed especially for homeschoolers. This
Homeschool Day will focus on social studies activities.

1. Homeschool Day Events at the Lighthouse

* Five of the six workshops will be brand new, and the sixth is
changed from its previous format. All workshops will center around the
kinds of daily tasks that were done by lighthouse keepers and their families
who lived at the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse.

o They include: the keeper’s duties in the lighthouse tower; domestic
chores such as laundry, sewing and gardening; and lighthouse kid’s chores
and how they entertained themselves.

o All students will have an opportunity to do laundry, gardening and
sewing, as it was done in the early twentieth century. They will also be
able to do some of the lighthouse keeper’s tasks, and find out the kinds of
chores the lighthouse children were expected to do (and even try one or
two).

o The point is to stress the difference between today’s life and life
at the lighthouse at the turn-of-the-
century.

Optional Activities:

* Identify 1900 Household Items – Examine, touch and guess what some
of these strange looking, yet very common household items were used for in
an early 1900’s household.

* Climb the Lighthouse Tower

2. Length of the Homeschool Day

When you come to Homeschool Day, you will spend 2½ hours, in the morning
session OR the afternoon session. You may give us your preference, in the
Comments/Additional Information box on the “checkout page”, when you
register. But since we are trying to even out the number of students
between the morning and afternoon, we may have to reassign a group.

When arriving at the lighthouse on November 6th, please come to the check-in
table under the tent in front of the Gift Shop.

If you are attending the morning session, please arrive by 9:15am , so we
can start letting groups into the lighthouse at 9:45 for the10:00 start.
You will be here until 12:30 / 1:00pm ; then you are free to have lunch and
enjoy the rest of the day (perhaps at the beach). If you are attending the
afternoon session, please arrive by 12:45pm , so we can start letting groups
into the lighthouse at 1:15 for the 1:30 start. You will be here until 4:00
/ 4:30pm .

We are limiting the total number of students for the day to 200. There will
be 100 students in the morning session and 100 students in the afternoon
session.

3. Registration & Payment

The price is the same for adults and students ($6.00/person), with children
3 yrs and under admitted free.

Homeschool families must register in advance for this event. Registration
and payment will be done on-line. (To insure that all available slots are
filled and no one is turned away unnecessarily, we require payment be made
at time of registration).

Registration will begin at 1:00 pm, on Tues., Oct 7, 2008.

Registration will be held in one month, in order to allow Homeschool groups
to contact their members and organize themselves for the event.

Registration Procedure:

Go to the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse web site: www.ponceinlet.org

* Click on “Merchandise” in the left column.

You will be taken to: the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse Gift Shop (secure) web site
at, www.poncelighthousestore.org

* Click on Home School Day Registration under “Product Categories”,
in the left column

* Follow the prompts.

* Fill in the number of ADULTS and STUDENTS attending

* Order a Homeschool T-Shirt (optional)

* Proceed to Checkout

(Please NOTE: After registering and paying for the Homeschool Day, your
receipt will show an “Order Handling Charge” of $4.00. This $4.00 WILL NOT
be charged to your credit card. Unfortunately, we were unable to remove it
from the printed receipt).

When the limit of 200 students is reached, on-line registration will be
disabled with an appropriate message. Please be advised that due to the
popularity of this event, we usually sell out within 24 to 48 hours, and no
stand-by list will be kept.

4. Admission

On Homeschool Day, please wear your wrist band at all times, this will be
your “admission ticket” to the lighthouse for the event.

We anticipate mailing out the wrist bands during the week of October 13,
marked with either the AM or PM session. On November 6, please arrive at
the lighthouse by 9:15 for admission at 9:45 am, OR by 12:45pm for admission
at 1:15pm. If, for some reason, you do not receive your wrist bands in the
mail, please bring your “order number” to the lighthouse at 9:00am on
November 6 to pick them up.

5. Homeschool T-Shirts

When you pay your admission on-line, you have the option of buying a
Homeschool Day T-Shirt with the lighthouse logo on the front, and the words:
“Ponce Inlet, Homeschool Day, November 6, 2008” with a drawing of the
lighthouse, on the back (see the diagram on the web order page). The shirts
can only be ordered on-line, and will be available for pick-up on November
6th. No shirts will be sold on November 6th.

6. Lunch

You may bring your bag lunch and eat it in the Town Park, located next to
the Lighthouse. Rest rooms, picnic tables and playground equipment are
also located in the park.

7. Satisfaction Survey

A “Homeschool Satisfaction Survey” will be put into your information packet.
Before you leave, please take a few minutes to complete this short, but
important, survey, and drop it in the survey box, located on the check-in
table in front of the Gift Shop. Your feedback will enable us to improve
our program in the future.

Please note that the lighthouse prohibits large backpacks, water bottles,
food and drink, games, toys, radios and pets on the grounds.

Where is Ponce Inlet? We are located on the beachside just south of Daytona
Beach. From I-95, take exit # 256 and proceed east on Dunlawton Avenue to
the oceanfront. Turn right on South Atlantic Avenue and travel
approximately 5 miles. Signs will direct you to the lighthouse.
