Trinity Foundation's Fourth Annual Essay Contest

The Trinity Foundation's Fourth Annual Christian Worldview Essay Contest is
underway. The topic book for the Contest this year is Freedom and
Capitalism: Essays on Christian Politics and Economics by John W. Robbins.
This is a collection of essays that demonstrates the Biblical foundation for
liberty -- both in politics and in economics.
In our society today, we have abdicated our Biblical responsibilities and
have let the government take more and more of our liberties away, often with
our consent. Freedom and Capitalism is a reminder that we are to conform all
our thinking, including our thinking on government and economics, to the
written revelation of God in the Bible.

The Essay Contest is open to those 17 to 23 years of age. Cash prizes are
awarded for the top three essays -- $3,000 for first prize, $2,000 for
second, and $1,000 for third. The complete rules and entry form may be found
at our website or by clicking on the links. If you are eligible, please
enter the contest. If you are too old, please urge your children and
grandchildren to enter.

Writing Contest

A very warm hello from Sylvan Dell Publishing!

My name is Maggie Stuart and I am the home schooling market liaison for Sylvan Dell Publishing in Mt. Pleasant , SC.   I’m writing today to let you know about our company and our first Picture Book Writing Competition for Home-Schooled Students.

Sylvan Dell is a young company on a mission to create picture books that excite children’s imaginations, are artistically spectacular and have educational value.  Our goal is to teach science and math through literature so that our titles entertain children while educating them on a variety of subjects.  We believe our educational picture books provide an advantageous resource for home-schooled students.

In order to give back to the home schooling community, Sylvan Dell Publishing is proud to announce our first writing contest.  We plan to offer this unique opportunity to home-schooled students annually, and we are excited to see the manuscripts that students will submit.

Please read the Call for Entries document that is available on our website.  It includes the competition guidelines and a “frequently asked questions” section. Once you visit the website, I invite you to preview our books and learn more about our authors, educators and Educational Support Team’s efforts to assist teachers, librarians and parents. We are also updating a page for parents and home-schoolers.

I hope you love our books and the Sylvan Dell approach to learning.  If you would like to learn more, Publicist Katherine Miller (KatherineMiller@SylvanDellPublishing.com) and I are happy to discuss the contest with you.  I hope that you will pass this information on to your home schooling friends, families and communities.  I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Maggie Stuart

The Presidental Freedom Scholarship

A Reward for Service: The Presidential Freedom Scholarship
by Roxana Hadad

Don't look now, but all those hours you've put in as a volunteer in
your community haven't gone unnoticed. Thanks to students like you,
volunteer work has made huge improvements in communities and people's
lives across the nation. And, it seems, the good deeds will be
rewardedwith a bonus of financial aid.

Truly Rewarding Work

The Presidential Freedom Scholarship is a program dedicated to
recognizing and rewarding the great job students are doing to improve
our neighborhoods and towns.

Through the program, outstanding student volunteers receive awards of
$1000, provided jointly by the Corporation for National Service and
the recipient's community. Supporters of the award have included the
Elks, Lions, Boys and Girls Clubs, Kiwanis, Moose, Rotary, PTAs, the
Links, Dollars for Scholars and the Miss America Organization.

But that's not allrecipients also receive an award certificate, a
letter from the President and a gold President's Student Service
Award pin.

Eligibility and Applications

The Presidential Freedom Scholarship is truly a community effort.
Educators in each district work with community leaders to decide how
to administer the award applications.

Because the program focuses on service, there is no minimum grade
point average. To be eligible you must:

Have contributed at least 100 hours of service to your community
within a 12-month period.
Be a high school junior or senior.
Attend a public, private, charter or parochial school within one of
the 50 states, the District of Columbia, a Native American tribe, a
U.S. territory or a Department of Defense school.
Plan to attend an institution of higher learning in the U.S.
Each high school in the country may select one junior or senior to
receive the award, based on their service record. The scholarship is
meant to "reward and encourage activities that have a significant
impact in meeting the needs of local communities." This includes:

Volunteerism in a community organization;
Service with a religious organization;
Work with a service-learning project; or
Individual efforts to improve the community.
Before you can be considered eligible, all volunteer activities must
be certified by your school principal and one member of the community
with whom you did volunteer work. Find out how your school will be
recording and certifying your volunteer hours to make sure you get
credit for your work.

With all the stuff you've got going on inside and outside of school,
you deserve a pat on the back for spending time giving back to your
community. Good job on your accomplishments and good luck!

A New Super hero?

Do you know kids who love superheroes?

We all do. Some of the most popular recent films are based on
comic-book superheroes Who hasn’t cheered for Spiderman, rooted for the
Fantastic Four, felt for the X-Men. Our family has, too. But we’ve always
wondered what a non-violent superhero would look like.

A non-violent superhero?

Is that even possible?

Having homeschooled our children for years (all three will be in
college this fall), we thought we’d give it a try as a school project. The
result of the family’s efforts (and the help of some talented friends)
is who we call Libroman—a new-style superhero who solves problems using
wit over weapons, forethought over fists. Yet it’s still interesting to
a media-saturated generation of kids.

Check out our website:

www.libroman.com

to see a preview of the first story, learn about us, and find free
links and educational resources.

While on the website, don’t forget to enter our contest to win a
great Libroman prize.

Please pass this on to whomever you think would be interested, and
please send us any suggestions or comments.

Thanks!

Chuck, Bonnie, Phil, Gabe, and Noel Pantely
