Homeschool Day

HOMESCHOOL DAY

On Thursday, November 6, 2008 , from 10am to 4pm , the Ponce Inlet
Lighthouse will present its fall Homeschool Day. This is a day of
educational and fun activities designed especially for homeschoolers. This
Homeschool Day will focus on social studies activities.

1. Homeschool Day Events at the Lighthouse

* Five of the six workshops will be brand new, and the sixth is
changed from its previous format. All workshops will center around the
kinds of daily tasks that were done by lighthouse keepers and their families
who lived at the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse.

o They include: the keeper’s duties in the lighthouse tower; domestic
chores such as laundry, sewing and gardening; and lighthouse kid’s chores
and how they entertained themselves.

o All students will have an opportunity to do laundry, gardening and
sewing, as it was done in the early twentieth century. They will also be
able to do some of the lighthouse keeper’s tasks, and find out the kinds of
chores the lighthouse children were expected to do (and even try one or
two).

o The point is to stress the difference between today’s life and life
at the lighthouse at the turn-of-the-
century.

Optional Activities:

* Identify 1900 Household Items – Examine, touch and guess what some
of these strange looking, yet very common household items were used for in
an early 1900’s household.

* Climb the Lighthouse Tower

2. Length of the Homeschool Day

When you come to Homeschool Day, you will spend 2½ hours, in the morning
session OR the afternoon session. You may give us your preference, in the
Comments/Additional Information box on the “checkout page”, when you
register. But since we are trying to even out the number of students
between the morning and afternoon, we may have to reassign a group.

When arriving at the lighthouse on November 6th, please come to the check-in
table under the tent in front of the Gift Shop.

If you are attending the morning session, please arrive by 9:15am , so we
can start letting groups into the lighthouse at 9:45 for the10:00 start.
You will be here until 12:30 / 1:00pm ; then you are free to have lunch and
enjoy the rest of the day (perhaps at the beach). If you are attending the
afternoon session, please arrive by 12:45pm , so we can start letting groups
into the lighthouse at 1:15 for the 1:30 start. You will be here until 4:00
/ 4:30pm .

We are limiting the total number of students for the day to 200. There will
be 100 students in the morning session and 100 students in the afternoon
session.

3. Registration & Payment

The price is the same for adults and students ($6.00/person), with children
3 yrs and under admitted free.

Homeschool families must register in advance for this event. Registration
and payment will be done on-line. (To insure that all available slots are
filled and no one is turned away unnecessarily, we require payment be made
at time of registration).

Registration will begin at 1:00 pm, on Tues., Oct 7, 2008.

Registration will be held in one month, in order to allow Homeschool groups
to contact their members and organize themselves for the event.

Registration Procedure:

Go to the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse web site: www.ponceinlet.org

* Click on “Merchandise” in the left column.

You will be taken to: the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse Gift Shop (secure) web site
at, www.poncelighthousestore.org

* Click on Home School Day Registration under “Product Categories”,
in the left column

* Follow the prompts.

* Fill in the number of ADULTS and STUDENTS attending

* Order a Homeschool T-Shirt (optional)

* Proceed to Checkout

(Please NOTE: After registering and paying for the Homeschool Day, your
receipt will show an “Order Handling Charge” of $4.00. This $4.00 WILL NOT
be charged to your credit card. Unfortunately, we were unable to remove it
from the printed receipt).

When the limit of 200 students is reached, on-line registration will be
disabled with an appropriate message. Please be advised that due to the
popularity of this event, we usually sell out within 24 to 48 hours, and no
stand-by list will be kept.

4. Admission

On Homeschool Day, please wear your wrist band at all times, this will be
your “admission ticket” to the lighthouse for the event.

We anticipate mailing out the wrist bands during the week of October 13,
marked with either the AM or PM session. On November 6, please arrive at
the lighthouse by 9:15 for admission at 9:45 am, OR by 12:45pm for admission
at 1:15pm. If, for some reason, you do not receive your wrist bands in the
mail, please bring your “order number” to the lighthouse at 9:00am on
November 6 to pick them up.

5. Homeschool T-Shirts

When you pay your admission on-line, you have the option of buying a
Homeschool Day T-Shirt with the lighthouse logo on the front, and the words:
“Ponce Inlet, Homeschool Day, November 6, 2008” with a drawing of the
lighthouse, on the back (see the diagram on the web order page). The shirts
can only be ordered on-line, and will be available for pick-up on November
6th. No shirts will be sold on November 6th.

6. Lunch

You may bring your bag lunch and eat it in the Town Park, located next to
the Lighthouse. Rest rooms, picnic tables and playground equipment are
also located in the park.

7. Satisfaction Survey

A “Homeschool Satisfaction Survey” will be put into your information packet.
Before you leave, please take a few minutes to complete this short, but
important, survey, and drop it in the survey box, located on the check-in
table in front of the Gift Shop. Your feedback will enable us to improve
our program in the future.

Please note that the lighthouse prohibits large backpacks, water bottles,
food and drink, games, toys, radios and pets on the grounds.

Where is Ponce Inlet? We are located on the beachside just south of Daytona
Beach. From I-95, take exit # 256 and proceed east on Dunlawton Avenue to
the oceanfront. Turn right on South Atlantic Avenue and travel
approximately 5 miles. Signs will direct you to the lighthouse.

National Annual Homeschool Hike/Bike Event

The Homeschool Hiking/Biking annual event began in May 2005 as a
way to gain recognition for homeschooling as well as getting some
exercise, group involvement, and introducing other homeschooling
families to hiking and biking in the great outdoors and meet
others!! It is an annual event now and will be held each year the
last full week in May. We are asking for individuals and groups
involved in homeschooling to set up events in their areas. You may
make your event in varying skill levels if you would like for
homeschoolers with varying skills. Maybe one person or group in your
area can set up a hiking event and another can set up the biking
event. Or you may want to work with many homeschooling groups to
have one big event. The possibilities are many, and I would love to
hear your ideas. This years dates are the week of May 25th to May
31st. The woods and paths and trails are beautiful in the spring so
please join us.
If you would like to set up a group event in your area, please send
your name, email address, phone, City and State, newspaper name
(phone and email also), Tv name and email, radio name and email to
me (Earlene) at:
homeschoolhikebike@hotmail.com
or call me at 240-727-0675

We can issue a press release to your local newspaper or to you to use everywhere
and please notify the local radio stations as well. Or you may go to our
website and copy the press release for yourself and group to use at:

http://www.freewebs.com/homeschoolhikebike/

You can also access this website to view all the state by state events listed so far
pictures of previous events.

Please
practice safe hiking and biking skills, take plenty of water and
snacks, and dress appropriately. We will assume no liability for any
accidents or injuries that may occur while participating in this event.

Please pass this info along to all homeschoolers and homeschool groups you know!!

Classical Conversations is coming to Orlando!

Dear Homeschooling Family,

Classical Conversations is coming to Orlando in the fall of 2007!

Classical Conversations is a systematic approach of teaching the
tools of learning classically. The purpose of our study together is
to know God and make Him known. Our goal is to create a classical
Christian home schooling community.

Have you considered joining a group of families who are learning
classically? In the morning session, we use memorization skills for
K4-6th grade in multiple subjects (including history, geography,
Latin, English grammar, math and science). Additionally, the
children do science experiments and an art/music project each week.

Also we have plans to offer an optional afternoon enrichment program
for our 3rd-6th graders to meet in a special program of writing
(Institute for Excellence in Writing), English grammar and friendly
math slam competition.

Our 7th through 12th grade students participate in a Challenge
Program to develop their dialectic and rhetorical skills. All our
students meet with a trained tutor once a week during the school
year. In order to get more information, check out Classical
Conversations' website at www.classicalconver
sations.com.

A free Information Meeting for parents will be held on Thursday,
Mar. 1 at 7 pm in the Wilshire Plaza, behind the Hess station on SR
436 in Casselberry. If you would like more information, you can
email Kim Allen at allenmomma@earthlink.net or call 407.671.2778.

Free Purity Workshop for all ages

We have the privilege of Mrs. Jennie Bishop, author of Princess and the Kiss,
Squire and the Scroll and The Garden Wall speaking at First Baptist of Oviedo
on Friday, January 12, 2007 from 10am-12noon. PLEASE tell your friends and
forward this email to anyone who is interested, whether or not they homeschool.
It is never too early to begin teaching our children to be pure at
heart, and it is never too late to instill these values, either! These books
are virtuous, wholesome and appropriate for anyone. Children of all ages are
welcome, and Mrs. Bishop will have a book table available and can sign books as
well. No rsvp is required, though I would love to see a great turnout! Invite
your friends, and encourage other parents to come! I have a beautiful color
flyer from Purityworks advertising the event, it is too big to go out on the
email list but I can email it to you individually if you would like. Let me
know, and then you can hand out flyers to anyone who is interested! They look
great in color or black & white.

For more information, contact me at 407-977-0001 or joyrecicar@bellsouth.net.

NEA Resolution

I am forwarding this for your information. I received this email from a family that is on Brenda Dickinson's board of directors. Their concern is getting the word out to homeschoolers so that they don't relax their guard, and to continue to support Brenda, the only home education lobbyist in Tallahassee, in whatever ways we can. Kim Coley

From the NEA website 2006-2007 Resolutions. This is a NEA resolution, their agenda, not proposed legislation.

B-75. Home Schooling
The National Education Association believes that home schooling programs based on parental choice cannot provide the student with a comprehensive education experience. When home schooling occurs, students enrolled must meet all state curricular requirements, including the taking and passing of assessments to ensure adequate academic progress. Home schooling should be limited to the children of the immediate family, with all expenses being borne by the parents/guardians. Instruction should be by persons who are licensed by the appropriate state education licensure agency, and a curriculum approved by the state department of education should be used.
The Association also believes that home-schooled students should not participate in any extracurricular activities in the public schools.
The Association further believes that local public school systems should have the authority to determine grade placement and/or credits earned toward graduation for students entering or re-entering the public school setting from a home school setting. (1988, 2006)

SS American Victory Education Programs

FOR PROGRAM DETAILS visit www.americanvictory .org

SS American Victory Education Programs Provide `Hands-On History' for
Students of All Ages The SS American Victory's Education Program
launches its fourth year as Tampa Bay area youngsters settle into the
2006-2007 school term. The ship's unique educational programs bring
history to life for students in an unparalleled fashion aboard an
authentic, working World War II era merchant cargo vessel. The
programs enhance elementary, middle or high school students'
knowledge of American and world history and social studies themes.
Themes and topics that can be presented include Florida and Tampa Bay
maritime history, local geographical, economic and cultural
characteristics that have made the region and state important players
in global economics, Cold War era political, economic and social
conditions that shaped modern-day America and the critical role
played by women, minorities and other groups on the home front during
World War II. American Victory educational program content coincides
with Florida Sunshine State Standards for social studies curricula
and can be tailored to fit lesson plans. Pre- and post-visit material
is available to plan for and reinforce a shipboard educational
experience. Program details are available by visiting
www.americanvictory .org and using the `Education' link on the home
page, by calling Tom Ringate, (813) 228-8766 or by email:
educator@americanvi ctory.org In addition, special interactive
activities can also be developed, allowing young learners to
experience what it was like to live and work aboard a merchant cargo
ship which served during America's wars. Docent-led Restoration Tours
for organizations of any type and individual self-guided tours are
also offered. The ship is open Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10 AM- 5 PM and
Sundays, 12 Noon - 5 PM (last tours begin at 4 PM). If planning a
visit, visitors should check the ship's availability by calling (813)
228-8766, as the schedule can change. The ship is berthed at 705
Channelside Drive in Tampa's Channelside District, adjacent to the
Florida Aquarium. Parking is available in the Florida Aquarium
Parking Lot. Plenty of seating is available on board for students or
groups to enjoy brown-bag lunches. A ship of the famous Victory Class
of cargo vessel launched in June 1945, the American Victory served
during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars, carrying `guns,
gear, grub and gas' to GIs. Following World War II, she carried food,
clothing and machinery to war-ravaged European countries for the
Untied Nations. Since opening in April 2000, thousands of visitors
have viewed the on-going restoration of the American Victory into a
world-class museum and cruising ship through education programs,
Restoration Tours, holiday celebrations and other activities. And,
more than 2,000 passengers have enjoyed day cruises on Tampa Bay. on
five `ReLive History' cruises. The ship has hosted scores of social
events, military unit reunions, concerts and other events.
