A LITTLE ABOUT GARY AND JAN
Gary and Jan are dear friends of ours who have taught us most of what we know
about building a good quality home library for our children. We have been
blessed by their friendship and we know you will be blessed by your time spent
with them as well. This will be a casual and relaxed Open House event to learn
about using Living books in homeschooling.
Gary and Jan Bloom began homeschooling their three children in 1982 and
continued until each became a college student. Along the way they learned a
lot about education, living books, children, true success, forgiveness, and
grace. In addition to offering helpful workshops, the Blooms bring 4,000+
vintage and out-of-print books available for purchase.
Gary Bloom holds a B.S. in Psychology from Northwestern College in St Paul, MN.
Jan Bloom holds a B.S. in Education, with a major in Physics and a minor in
Math, from the University of Minnesota. Jan is the author of Who Should We Then
Read? and What Should We Then Know? and has written for Homeschooling Today and
other publications. Gary and Jan are exhibitors and speakers at homeschooling
conferences across the United States.

SEMINAR DESCRIPTIONS
SAILING ON LIVING LIGHT
Voyaging with Great Books
Adventure, excitement, understanding, and delight - welcome to the world of
living books, where the fresh breezes of new worlds stir imaginations! Discover
how to travel through subjects with authors who wrote books that are
interesting, informative, well written, and enjoyable, books that become some of
our guides and maps as we journey through life. Jan, a veteran homeschooler and
author, will navigate through both nonfiction and fiction, explaining how each
can take us nearer our hearts desire of knowing the God who made us in His
thinking, creative image.
KEEPERS OF THE BOOKS
The Vital Importance of a Home Library
Throughout history, reading and books have been associated with culture,
learning, and wisdom. In our modern times, books have yielded to electronic
information systems. Jan, a vintage bookseller, believes that the older books,
written true to a Christian worldview and absent many modern biases, need to be
rescued from destruction, read by the students of today, and kept safe for
future generations. Jan gives guidelines on choosing which books to include in a
home library, which books to borrow from a public library, and which books to
send to the trash. Practical suggestions on book repair, deodorizing, and
organizing will also be discussed.
THE RETURN OF MR. INCREDIBLE
Becoming Men of Purpose and Passion
Dads, when was the last time you felt like Mr. Incredible BEFORE he was
squelched and banned by a society that prohibited masculinity? When was the
last time you climbed a mountain, went sky diving, or experienced Gods power in
prayer? Join Gary, an only son with 5 sisters, left fatherless at age 14, as he
chronicles some of the differences hes experienced that began when he became
convinced that masculinity is not something to be ignored or ashamed of, but a
tool to be kept sharp or a weapon kept ready to be used in the battles of life.
The same passion that men have for challenges and battles is only a dim
reflection of the passion for God that grows out of being a true man.
KOWABUNGA!
THE FOUNDATIONAL FIVE
Bible Stories, Fairy Tales, Mother Goose, Aesops Fables, and Mythology
David and his five smooth stones, Cinderella and her glass slipper, Mary and her
lamb, the tortoise and the hare, and Dynamite are only a few examples of how
these five collections of tales have influenced our literature, our language,
and our lives. Learning the prime stories gathered in these sources equips your
students to enjoy a lifetime of reading and getting the most out of the
allusions, metaphors, and subtle remarks that were mined from these great
classics.
ALWAYS WINTER AND NEVER CHRISTMAS
Help for the Faint of Heart
Jan will identify and discuss many of the mistakes that make homeschooling feel
like a bleak and dreary winter of the soul and mind. Jans three children,
homeschooled from 1982 until each them began college, still talk to their
parents only because God brought the joy of the incarnation into their
homeschool after years of struggle. Her message is one of help, hope, and
healing for the struggling mother.
IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE
DETAILS
Children are welcome to attend, however child care will NOT be provided. The
KARS Park Complex has playgrounds in the surrounding area that we are welcome to
use during the seminar. However, be mindful that these playgrounds are not
within close proximity (beyond 200 yards of the seminar location) and that there
will be NO organized adult supervision so carefully consider this as you will be
responsible for the safety and well-being of your children. Also, as a courtesy
to everyone in attendance, especially the children, we ask that you please do
not bring anyone that is sick to the event.
We ask that each family be responsible for their own food and drinks. There are
picnic tables available for use throughout the park.
So come and enrich your life by listening to these wonderful speakers as they
encourage us in our home educating, our family life, and in the importance of
Living Books with time to talk to them throughout the seminar.
