GENERAL INFORMATION

VOLUNTEERS During the semester we need and welcome all
volunteer help, but will not require it. We would like
to think that everyone will give a helping hand where
needed. It's a lot of work setting up and picking up
every week so if you or your child can volunteer,
please speak with a Planning Team member.

BABY ROOM There is a cute little nursery available if
you want to go in there with your baby.  If you want
your baby to be with you while you hang out with
others, then bring your baby with you.  We homeschool
and like our kids to be with us! Of course, you may
not leave your baby in there unattended.

ACTIVITY AREA In addition to the giant gymnasium we
have at LEAP Day, there is also a community activity
area where everyone is welcome to hangout together.
We all love being with our kids, and they love being
around each other without being divided into age
groups. We want to provide an atmosphere where we can
chat, make new friends, nurse our babies, play with
our kids, and just relax and have fun. You are welcome
to bring any board games or toys each week.

CLEAN-UP In the wisdom of the great Barney...cleanup,
cleanup everybody everywhere, cleanup, cleanup,
everybody do your share.

PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES If you must leave the premises
when your children are in class, you can designate a
friend to take responsibility for your child. There
will be a sign-out sheet in the lunchroom for this.
SIGNING OUT IS MANDATORY.

ILLNESS IN FAMILY  Please be aware that some of our
members have health issues such as compromised immune
systems.  Please be respectful of this and STAY HOME
if you or your child/children are sick or getting
sick.

PARENT CONNECTION/SUPPORT MEETING This hour is a
combination of an open forum on homeschooling topics,
guest speakers, and discussions of relevant issues.
You do not need to participate in Leap Day to attend
Parent Connection.  If you know someone who is
"shopping around" for a co-op, please invite them to
Parent Connection to see what we are all about.  If
you want to "get connected" and make some new friends,
Parent Connection is for you! This time is meant for
parents to re-energize and receive support. If you
have any suggestions for a Parent Connection topic
contact Kim @ kemzs@tampabay.rr.com

EXPLORING CHINESE AND JAPANESE CHARACTERS: A WORKSHOP
All Ages.  Adults are welcome too.
Cost: $40.
Chinese (and Japanese) characters are abstract symbols
that stand for words. For example the Chinese word
meaning "tree" and the Japanese word meaning "tree"
are both written using the same character, even though
the spoken words in these two different languages
sound completely different. (Ancient Egyptian
hieroglyphic writing also used abstract symbols to
stand for words--but these were quite different
symbols.)  In this workshop students will explore the
idea of abstract symbolic writing using Chinese
characters as a hands-on example. Students will be
playing with these characters as if they were puzzle
pieces, by taking them apart, by redoing the pictures
to make them easier to recognize, and by making up our
own characters. Some students might even try their
hands at creating their own abstract writing systems.
Studying and practicing a symbolic system is a useful
cognitive activity. Symbolic systems are used in many
other areas, such as music, math, algebra, computer
science, and chemistry.

CHINESE LANGUAGE STUDY GROUP
All ages
Cost: $60.
This class welcomes both new and continuing students.
Students will emphasize spoken Chinese, but will also
look at Chinese grammatical structures to help us
grasp and retain what we are learning. Students  will
learn everyday Chinese.  Our highest priority is to
enjoy learning Chinese together.

JAPANESE with Patrick Murray
Ages 5-8
9-12
13 & up
Cost: $80
Each class will be very small (max of 6 students per
group) with students close in age. This will allow us
to discuss what each student wants to get out of
learning Japanese. As a teacher, his first goal is for
each class to develop itself into an interacting
learning group motivated by interest, enjoyment and
group-created energy. Each "learning group" (class)
will create it's own recipe of how to study Japanese.
The ingredients of each "recipe" will always include
spoken Japanese, Japanese grammar, Japanese writing,
Japanese stories, movies, anime, comics, etc. We will
also be discussing and learning about life in Japan.
Patrick Murray has a Ph.D in Linguistics and has
extensive international experience, both studying
languages and teaching English as a foreign language.
He served as a high school math teacher as a Peace
Corps. volunteer in the Philippines. He has lived in
and studied the languages of the following countries:
Japan, Taiwan (Chinese), Peru (Spanish), and France.
In addition he studied German and Russian. He has
always found it fascinating to get to know people in
other cultures. This is his main reason for wanting to
learn their languages.  Pat Murray/ChineseJapanese

Jr. Lego Engineering with Bruce Bertan
Ages 6-8
Cost $100
This is a great introduction to the engineering
classic series.  Primary grade students will work with
Lego building blocks to learn hands-on about simple
machines and simple engineering principles.  Each week
we will build Math and Science skills as we explore
and build simple machines.  Students will learn about
levers, wheels, axles, pulleys and gears.  They will
practice using their knowledge by building a simple
machine through guided activities, then challenged to
solve problems requiring them to apply concepts
learned by building an original simple machine.
Prerequisites:  None

Pre-Engineering I with Lego
Ages 8-10
Cost $100
Each week students will have hands-on learning as they
explore levers, wheels, axles and gears using a
different class of Lego building blocks than the Jr.
Engineering class.  They will apply their knowledge to
build simple machines that incorporate an engineering
principle.  Then they'll be challenged to apply their
knowledge and come up with some of their own designs.
Prerequisite:  8 year olds should have completed Jr.
Lego Engineering.

Engineering I with Lego
Ages 9-12
Cost $100
There will be more hands-on learning as we explore
structures, forces, levers, wheels, axles and gears
using Lego building blocks.  This class expands the
students' knowledge and understanding of the
engineering principles learned in Pre Engineering I,
adds motors to the simple machines students build and
includes more advanced Lego building concepts and
exploration of gears.  Challenges include "The Big

Anthropology with Sandra Murray

Early Civilizations
Ages 6 & up
Cost: $70 (second child is $60.00)
In this class students will visit some of the main
civilizations of the old world: The Far East (China,
India, SE Asia).  We will look at their basic
governments (kings or other leaders), daily life in
their towns and villages, Gods, Goddesses, heroes
and/or demons and finally relationships with
neighboring people (peaceful or war-like).   Since
surviving art forms tell us so much about these people
we will have some "hands on" projects such as paper
mosaics, masks, etc.

INTRODUCTION TO ANTHROPOLOGY
Ages 10 & up
Cost: $70.00 (second child $60.00)
This class will equip you to better understand any
social science class. We will look at the various
levels of complexity by which humans have
traditionally organized their societies: tribal or
state; hunter/gatherer; horticulturists or
agriculturalists. In doing so, we will discover that
family systems are differently formatted and that
gender roles (male/female roles) do not necessarily
look like ours. We will also examine the transition
from "child" to "adult" and the years of initiation
ceremonies to accomplish this. Several societies
around the world will be presented in order to see
these ideas in action.

ANTHROPOLOGY ll
Ages 12 & up
Cost: $70 ($60 for additional child)
This is a hands-on class, open to students who have
taken the Intro. to Anthro. or the Marriage/Family
class. We will be learning how to get basic
anthropological information by learning how conduct
simple interviews and organize the data. (Life history
material is used in other fields such as History,
Sociology, Journalism, and Literature.)  We will read
samples of various life history materials, and
students can choose to find and interview their own
"subject" (e.g. a friend, a family
member, or someone in their community.) Due to the
short class time, students may choose to focus on only
a segment of their subject's life. Such a project can
of course be continued if the student wants.
Sandra Murray has a Ph.D in Anthropology. She was born
