What a Saturday!!!!

Posted in Curriculum

We planned to go to Sam's Club and later take the girls to see Charlotte's Web.   We had a great day in our PJ's, slept in and did absolutely NOTHING!  It was bliss, it really was.  Normally, I don't like non-productive days, but we throughly enjoyed not having the pressure of having to be somewhere, having to cook for some event, or having to spend money at a store.  We need more days like this!!!  I think my dh is relaxed.

On the HS front this is what we have planned for next year:

Science for both girls:
Animals Worlds by WP

Oldest daughter (3rd grade):
Saxon Math
Shurley English
Grammar Rock CD
Wordly Wise (vocab)
Spellwell
readers (from library)
Geography- GeoChallenge, already have this & we will keep a geography notebook to go along with it.

Youngest daughter (kindergarten)
WP Advanced LA
Saxon Math

We also need:
Saxon Math Manipulatives
Bible--we'll probably use something we already have
Financial Peace Jr for kids.
Art--I have an Abeka art book that I may use.
Music--both of the girls will be learning to play an instrument.

I know I don't have anything for history. We may do some historical lapbooks at various times throughout the year. The 2nd year we hs, we are looking at WP AS1 or Truthquest.  Someone on the Homeschool Review message board suggested that some of Little Brownie's reader's have historical content.  I think that's a great idea.

This picture is of our family in the fall of 2006.  An exact replica of the Nina came to our town, so we went to see it.  It was rainy & quite dreary, we were the only ones there!  We had a wonderful time & made a great family memory that day.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Beginning Lapbooking.

Posted in Curriculum

I don't have pictures to post yet, but my dd, Little Brownie, has started her very first lapbook!!!  I'm part of  a Yahoo lapbooking group owned by In the Hands of a Child, so when they asked for homeschoolers to complete & review a lapbook for free, I jumped at the chance!  We picked the project pack Mollusks, and it is recommended for grades 3-8.  It does say that you can adapt it for younger learners which is a good thing b/c Little Brownie is in the 2nd grade.

Although we have not completed the lapbook, let me share with you the good things about it.  There are plenty of activities for the lapbook.  I received an e-book & I like how I can print the activity that we are working on.  Since this is our first lapbook, I appreciate the detailed instruction on how to put it together.  My mom (who is a public school teacher) is also working on it with her & she loves it.  She has never heard of lapbooking before.  The e-book came with links to websites about mollusks, but we have not tried them yet (tomorrow).  I am exicited to incorporate more lapbooking into our homeschooling.  It is my understanding that Hands of a Child will put together a project pack as a special order, if they don't have one already available on the subject that you are studing.  I plan on taking advantage of this in the spring, as Little Brownie will start to read more challenging books.  I really think this will help her to retain what she has read.

The only thing that I would want in addition to an already fabulous project pack is a book list for additional reading.  But that's just me, I love books!  I'll post pictures as soon as DD is back from visiting with my Mom (they have the lapbook & are putting the finishing touches on it as I type).

You can check out Hands of a Child at www.handsofachild.com.  I love it & I can't wait to place an order in the spring!

Thanks for stopping by!
