Mar. 23, 2008 Tapestry of Grace
| I am looking forward to starting Tapestry of Grace, Redesign 2 in the fall. I actually hope to start in the summer but first I need to do some planning.
I also have Home School Tracker Plus which I love. I had to get Parallel to run it on my new IMAC but now it is up and running. I am looking forward to getting into the "meat" of planning and laying out the year. It is crazy, I just get really excited about planning the year. |

Mar. 9, 2007 What A Wonderful Time of the Year!!
Testing for us is the first week of April. Therefore, we are finishing our year for the most part. However, I am never able to just sit and enjoy the off time because I am always planning the next year.
Our homeschool conference is in May so I try to have my plan by then. I like to see what works, didn't work, needs to be added, etc. for next year. Of course, the kids are getting bigger and their subjects are getting more intense.
So, off I go to form a plan. I hope to spend the spring and summer studying ahead for next year. I think I am learning more than the kiddos are learning. |

Jan. 23, 2007 I'm Jumping Off the Assembly Line!!
I was amazed when I read Chris Davis in "I Saw the Angel in the Marble" talk about setting a context in which to home educate. Then, I was excited to read "Thomas Jefferson Education" by Oliver DeMille. Now, I am finally making the jump to stop doing "school at home" after reading and listening to "Leadership Education" by Kerry Beck at Curriculum Connection.
I have always seen education as more than academics, but I have subtly bought into the curriculum trap, each one seeming better than the last. Somewhere along the way, our education began to look like "school" too much. I needed to read and hear this voice from the wilderness calling me back to my original calling to educate my children to be passionate about Christ and serve Him without compromise.
God called us to home educate and I know His plans are for us to prosper and have a vision to serve Him, fulfulling the purpose we are called to this earth to complete. I just pray I stay steadfast in my convictions. |

Jan. 12, 2007 Marley and Me - What a Blessing!!
I just finished Marley and Me. I found it one of the best books I have ever read. I think the author, John Grogan, did a fantastic job in making me a part of his story. Having a yellow lab myself, I could certainly relate to many of the antics of Marley and the unconditional love of a Lab to its family. I feel blessed in just getting to read this book and recommend it to everyone, especially the pet lovers. However, it does deal with marital issues so it is best "screened" before letting any children read it. I shared many of the funny parts with my own kids but conveniently left off some of the things I didn't want to explain to my little ones.
Great read!! |

Dec. 20, 2006 What a Treat if your a Deac!!
Last night we got the unexpected chance to go see the Wake Forest Demon Deacons play basketball. They won big but the biggest treat was the football team was there. My youngest ds walked right up to Riley Skinner, the quarterback and winner of Rookie of the Year Award, and said, "What's up Riley?" He was so nice to him and they laughed and talked a while. He autographed their shirts.
They also got the autograph of #5. Then, we concluded the evening by seeing the lights in Tangewood park outside of Winston-Salem but not before stopping at Barnes & Noble for a coffee. Great night!! |

Nov. 13, 2006 Staying Home to Home School!
This year, I have made a
definite choice to stay home to educate. I know that sounds goofy
when our family has always homeschooled but each year I found myself
tied into more and more things outside the home. Even though they
were good, they were not the best for the kids or myself.
Some things I have discovered this year include:
sleeping late if we want makes for happy and rested children
making experiments can last forever
reading increases incrementally when we don't rush
books can become our best friends
we can actually get work done without rushing
I have felt a little guilty this year saying No to
so many things, but looking back at all we have accomplished so far, I
wouldn't change a thing. We have rediscovered Home Education
actually done at Home!!

Aug. 31, 2006 Children Say the Funniest Things
My oldest son, almost
12, made two very interesting observations since we started back our
school year. First, he said, "Mom, did you know you act more and
more like a teacher every year?" Following this bit of knowledge,
he decided another benefit to home education is that a student can
never be expelled. The principal can't throw them out of school
and send them home because they are already there.
Wow, I am amazed at how bright my little Einstein's
have become. Guess it is welcome to the young adult
years!!

Aug. 20, 2006 Wow, A Week at the Beach!!!
We just got back from a relaxing week at
Oak Island, NC. It was great to sit and hear the ocean, reading a
great book at the same time. My dh and I have this ongoing
tit-for-tat about me going to the beach when we retire and him going to
the mountains. I guess we'll see. We got the chance to
help a volunteer babysit a turtle-egg site. We went every night
about 9:00 pm and stayed until almost midnight. It was so
educational and time seemed to fly by. Who would have thought
sitting and watching sand could be so much fun. They never did
hatch, but I felt we did our small part. A lot of turtles
die by ingesting plastic bags that they mistake as jellyfish.
When we went to the grocery store after arriving home, my son asked for
paper bags at the grocery store in honor of the turtle. The man
was interested so he shared a little with him. Guess the
information didn't go unnoticed!!

May. 8, 2006 Take Me Out To The Ballgame But Be Realistic Please!!
I was recently told I haven't updated my blog spot very much
lately. We have three boys on four baseball teams now which has
kept us busy to say the least. Three play on different teams and
one also plays on a challenge team that plays in tournaments. So
far our overall record is 11-11 and 1. It has been lots of fun
watching them grow in skills and confidence. With the ups have
also come the downs.
It has been great to see them make new friends and learn to persevere
through the struggles. They have all become determined young men,
willing to work hard to become better players. Getting our work
finished is a real struggle but this too shall come to pass.
So, if I don't update often, just remember us at the ballpark!!

Mar. 30, 2006 The Newest Members of the Family-Boga and Padme'
Our newest additions are bearded
dragons. We received Boga and Padme' on Tuesday via UPS.
They travelled from Pennsylvania together and got here just after
lunch. We had to do our read-alouds outside because everyone was
so excited about them getting here. They started running around
immediately and are definitely hungry little dragons. They are 5
week old bearded dragons. When they arrived they were 7 inches
long and weighed about 12 grams. They are so cute, we love to
watch them react with each other!! We'll keep you updated on
their growth.

Mar. 16, 2006 Mariage Retreat-Here I Come!!
I'm going to a marriage retreat for the
weekend. Are we having problems? No, that is the
point. I am looking forward to having time to talk without
interuptions, a time to focus on marriage. I am looking forward
to meeting Christ anew more than anything for it was during a time of
"spiritual sprinting" that I met my dh. Daily life has a way of
wearing off the spiritual edge I once had. I am at a place now
where I am struggling to see Christ fresh and alive. I need this
weekend to reconnect!!
I hope to come back a better wife and mother but,
more than anything, I hope to come back a stronger disciple for
Christ. Then, being a great Mom and Wife becomes much easier.

Feb. 12, 2006 Happy Birthday, Mr. Lincoln
Was he a man unable to fail or a fool
unwilling to quit? I find it amazing that, despite all adversity
and shortcomings that tripped him up along the way, Lincoln found the
perseverance to keep trying one more time. We would be so much
different if he hadn't stood for his beliefs. That is pretty rare
now!!
Just a little note to wish him Happy Birthday. After all, he
ended up paying the ultimate price to set men free. Think he ever
read about Jesus?

Feb. 6, 2006 It's My Birthday Tomorrow
Tomorrow is my birthday and, let's just
say, I'm not 29 anymore. The kids cannot figure out why grownups
don't celebrate their birthday for a week at a time. They want to
have cake, balloons, etc. So, guess what we'll do? You
guessed it, make a cake, buy balloons, sing "Happy Birthday" 20 times
and celebrate the entire day. After all, the happy in the day
comes from their smiling faces anyway. However, I just wish I could figure out how to get those goofy calories out of my cake!!

Nov. 22, 2005 Let the Season Begin!!
Well, we are off in the morning to
visit all the relatives. First to Dalton, GA for one night, to
Kennesaw, GA for two nights and to Mississippi for one night. The van
is packed, I'm heading for a bath, and I probably will have trouble
sleeping because I willl wonder what I forgot to bring. We are
looking forward to going to MS because my dh is preaching at two
churches we partnered with that suffered major damage during Hurrican
Katrina. I haven't seen it first hand yet so I am looking forward
to it but also dreading the trip. Thanksgiving is a
wonderful holiday. A time to reflect on the goodness of God, the
beauty of family and the wealth of grace we receive each year.
May everyone remember to thank God on this wonderful holiday and give
him a round of applause!

Oct. 31, 2005 Where Is My Extra Hour?
Nobody seems to have told my
children about the time change. They were up at 6:30 this morning
saying, "Mom, get up! It's time to start school." The alarm
hadn't even gone off yet. Isn't that illegal or something?
Anyway, we did finish all our work early today and even had a chance to
meet Dad for lunch. I think maybe I like this early morning
thing, after a pot of very strong coffee!!

Oct. 30, 2005 The Riverdogs and Rockies Win!!
Saturday marked the end of a
winning season for Wyatt and Trey. Trey went 3 for 3 with one
in-the-park homerun. He had a terrific game. Wyatt went
3 for 3 and won the game with a hard drive into the outfield in the
last inning to score the winning runs. He also made a diving
catch in the outfield when bases were loaded for the opposing
team. He got a trophy and the game ball!! His team won the
tournament for the 9 & 10 year olds. Thus marks the end of our fall baseball season. Good news, only four weeks until basketball practice begins.

Oct. 26, 2005 Wyatt Scores The Winning Run!!!
Tonight was the first round for our
baseball tournament in the 9 & 10 year old division. Wyatt
went 2 for 3 and scored the winning run. We had a pretty hard day
in Math today so I told him I wish he would give it the same effort as
baseball. He said, "Mom, I'm just so glad you are always my
number one fan." Gotta luv 'em. Cody's last game was
suppose to be tonight but the other team forfeited. He was really
disappointed. I wish he would have had that last game "time."

Oct. 20, 2005 Life Is Never Boring
I just got home
from yet another baseball game. This one was different
though. The other team from a neighboring community never showed
up. It seems they didn't like our demeanor so the coaches there
decided they weren't going to show up.
It amazes me that grown men would harm the children just to have their
way. Our team just decided to scrimmage each other and ended up
having a great time. So many times we do the
same thing with God. We want to prove a point and end up hurting
the innocent, we want our way and end up missing the fun.
God always has something exciting to share, we just
have to keep out of the way. In getting our own way, we often
miss the blessing. Life was never meant to be all about us, yet
so many spend their entire lives striving for just that - US. The
middle letter of sin is "I" which is usually what we are thinking about
when we do sin. I hope to keep my eyes upon Christ and run the
race of life for His glory, not my own.
