The Little Duke - Narration by my oldest son
Richard came running in the house and was hollering I shot him, I shot him, I shot him! Right in the neck! I didnt kill him I only struck him. Lasy Astrida said, Did they bring home the venison? Yes, they did. They did bring home the venison. As Lady Astrida was getting him dressed he was begging her to give him his dagar, but she would not do it. Then his father came to visit. The Duke of Normandy! Richard ran down the big hallway and the steps to see his father. Richard knelt down to get his blessing and his father put his hand on him. Then he picked him up, held him against his chest, and kissed him over and over again. When his father got done kissing Richard Richard was suppose to meet all the nobles. When they were done feasting and Richard had met everybody, everybody had left to check on their horses. The few that were left gathered in groups. Richard sat on his fathers lap telling about when he had shot the deer, and about when Osmond took him down to the stream to bathe. After he got done talking about when Osmond took him to the stream to bathe, his father asked him about what he learned from Father Lucas. Then Richard pulled his fathers silver chain out and found a silver key. He asked his father what this key unlocked. His father replied and said it went to his greatest treasures.
Fru Astrida was telling the story of Earl Rollo while Richard was tickling the dogs. Fru Astrida was interrupted by a bugle horn. Count Bernard and Sir Rainulf came in the castle. They were telling the news of how Duke William had died. Richard was thinking so much of vengance wanting to get the false Fleming back. Count Bernard and Sir Rainulf said to Richard My Lord, I am your liegman and true vassal. The Baron repeated the same words. They were planning to get the false Fleming back. They said that Duke Richard would ride with them tomorrow to get his sword and shield.
Richard was in his bed listening to all the nobles talk about his father dying. Richard had fell asleep thinking that it was a dream. The next day they were ready to ride to get his sword and shield. Lady Astrida would not let him go but the nobles said she would have to ride in the back of the line. They gave the Duke a bag of silver coins to throw out and give to the crowd watching him go by. The soldiers stayed at the Barons castle to eat lunch. The Baron joined them on their trip to the town. They finally stopped at the cathedral. Richard made a cross sign on his forehead then sprinkled the water still left on his hands on his father. The water that he sprinkled on his father was holy water. Richard started a vow of vengance but one of the priests stopped him feom saying it telling him to look at the cross and asking him what it was a sign of. Richard said it was a sign of forgiveness. Then he said if you will make a vow it should be a vow of forgiveness.
THE CORONATION Richard was at the funeral. He was sad that his father Duke of Normandy died. After the funeral was over he got his sceptor and crown. The sword was too tall and it went over his head. Sir Eric had to hold the crown on his head or it would fall down in his eyes. While Richard was walking to his throne he yawned but it brought a frown to the stern face of Bernard. Pa attention like you did to the first person that bowed down. After he was to his throne he was suppose to feast with the nobles. He sat in the high seat. He fell asleep. After the feast was over the harsh voice of Count Bernard awoke him. Be kind to this babe, The Duke of Brittany said. Richard was walking down the hall when one of the nobles came running up and showed him a chain with a key on it. Richard replied and said, Oh yes, my father said this was the key to his greatest treasures. He went down to the chamber his father slept in. There was not much furniture. There was an uncurtained bed and two chests. The nobles opened one of the chests, it came opened, there was clothes in it. One of the nobles tried to open the other chest. This chest was carved nicer and much neater but it was locked. The key fitted the lock and it opened. There was a cloak and a pair of sandals. One of the nobles complained and said ha, some treasure is this. Another noble spoke up and said Yes, it is his greatest treasure. He was telling the history of the cloak and sandals. One time when they were out hunting they stopped by some monks house. They gave them some bread and food to eat. Then when they were leaveing the monks house a warthog picked William up and threw him down. They took him to the nearest shelter, back to the monks house. Duke William wanted to be a monk but one of the nobles would not let it happen. And since then he had the cloak that the monks gave to him. When Richard was old enough to be the Duke William would wear it and be a monk. He went to Fru Astrida and laid down on her lap and told her I am very, very tired of being the Duke of Normandy!"
