Adventures in Homeschooling
Scorpions
Posted on Sep. 17, 2007 at 2:45 PM in In My Garden
I think it must be a common homeschool trait to take something that is not ideal and turn it into a homeschool project. We are now the proud (?!?) owners of a temporarily still alive, in a canning jar on our kitchen counter .. scorpion. Not only just a scorpion but an Arizona Bark scorpion, the most deadly scorpion in America!
We will have lived in our home for 9 years this year and had never seen a scorpion until recently. Over the last 2-3 months we have found two small live ones in our garage and 1 larger dead one (killed by one of our cats) in our living room. I love my wonderful bug/mice/scorpion catching and killing cats and we are now considering getting another one!
Please pray for us if we come to mind, we would like to find a way to rid our property of these interesting but scary creatures without using poison. We learned about getting rid of their food source and removing any comfortable looking possible scorpion residences. We bought two blacklights and have gone on scorpion searches … we have not found any that way. We have added another cat to our wish list as I mentioned above.
God’s creation always awes me and I can easily find beauty in it but there are several of His creations I do not want to live in close proximity to … scorpions are one of them! :)
Our newest “pet” …

I am sorry it is not clearer, mason jars are not the ideal thing to take a picture through!
Plans are in the works for a scorpion picture taking session (including blacklight photos I am sure) and drawings to be done before our “friend” is … well, no longer with us.

We have now seen three scorpions. There was a large one in our garage, we killed it. The second one was out on our back porch by our kitchen door. That little guy was found by my 8 year old dd who was keeping an eye on where my 15 month old was playing out there. She saw the scorpion as he was getting ready to grab a toy right over there. Our third one was found by the same dd. This one was by the same kitchen door, only on the inside! Fortunately, this little guy was already dead.
What are some of the natural ways you've found to get rid of the food source? How do you get rid of all those crickets?

What a nasty little creature!
I've only had one experience with a scorpion. It was many years ago when my son was two or three. He had wanted to start a garden and it had been suggested to start the plants in pots. So my son and I pulled out pots, soil and seeds and started working. He started screaming! I rushed him inside and started looking for the problem. Turns out a scorpion had climbed up the inside of his pants and had stung him on his little thigh. I panicked as I had always heard scorpions were deadly so I dialed 911. I asked them how dangerous Fl scorpions were but they didn't know so we raced to meet the ambulance.
The ambulance people LAUGHED at me. Turns out Florida scorpions are like a mosquito bite. Live and learn (and sometimes get laughed it, lol)

The closest to that I can relate to is have a rattle snake curled up on a rubbermaid box in our boys basement bedroom in Kansas City, MO. That terrified me, thankfully dh was across the street working and he came home and "rescued" us.

A scorpion? A SCORpion? A scorPION? No matter HOW I say it, I cannot grasp this being a welcome addition in my house? I just must be a city girl at heart? Frogs, worms, even an occasional beetle. But a scorpion? You are a braver Mom than most!
Good Kitty!

Oh My! I guess that would seal it for me - no, I don't think I would like to move to AZ - not as long as there are snakes and those awful creatures. Yikes! We have had our share of varmints lately too - skunk, opossum, woodchuck - they seem to be taking over so I told my dh I didn't care what he did - just get rid of them for health & safety sake. Tonight he brought home our/his first gun. I am terribly aftraid of guns too, but we had little choice - they seem to ellude the live traps.
