Do Not Grow Weary

or Rambling Thoughts of a Homeschool Mom ...

And let us not be
weary in well doing:
for in due season
we shall reap,
if we faint not.

The school/craft/sewing room and the hall ...

Posted on Dec. 1, 2005 at 7:59 AM

in Rambling Thoughts

Oooooh! I can hardly believe I forgot to write about the plans for our school/craft/sewing room and hall! What wasted space that has such possibility.

School/craft/sewing room - right now this room has:

- two tables in it, one is a wooden rectangular shape and the other is a gateleg table with drop down sides that belonged to my Grandma.

- two tall bookcases that have a shelf attached between them that serves as a computer desk, a rolling shelf is attached underneath for the keyboard.

- an antique wash stand that has been in my husband’s family for a couple generations that is holding the Epson all in one printer/scanner thingie. Such a pretty little stand.

- a closet that is filled with shelves, 8 large plastic drawers, several large plastic containers and lots of cardboard file boxes. I have attempted to organize all our sewing/craft stuff but what I really need is a new system, maybe rip out the existing closet shelf and pole and start over with the basics.

- a beautiful red glass lamp that belonged to my Dad. My house is a sea of pink, sage green and white with a lovely dusty steel blue in my bedroom. No red, on purpose anywhere … I do not even decorate for Christmas with red!! But in the school/craft/sewing room red reigns all because of the lamp. It is beautiful and it reminds me of my Dad. He died 12.5 years ago … . Red is it and I love it in that room. :)

- there is a built in shelf above the closet that holds porcelain dolls that belonged to my grandma … they will be staying too.

- the walls are painted a creamy white with beigey splotches all over (done with plastic bags) … my older girls had so much fun doing that last summer.

- there is a desk hutch, that I added a shelf to the bottom, hung on one wall. It has pretty photo boxes on it that are filled with supplies of all kinds (stationary, stencils, label makers, etc …), the girls school folders and Memory Makers magazines.

- there are 2 white chairs in there that match our kitchen table chairs (great for company!!) and we have already bought more so we can stop carting the chairs we need back and forth from the kitchen. The new chairs are still in boxes waiting to be assembled … they came from IKEA - I love that place! lol

The gateleg table, chairs, the red lamp and dolls from my grandma are all staying, everything else will go. Well, not the supplies, books, etc. Our plans include either putting several small desks or tables around the edge, of about half of the room, or building a low counter that does the same. Small desks or tables would be nice because they could be moved into a big table of sorts or, if we are blessed with more children, could be dispersed into other rooms if this room was every needed. The counter might be easier … I am having a hard time finding small desks or tables that I like. Having the counters/desk/tables in this fashion will allow us to keep the gateleg table in this room in the open space, probably with one side down next to the window, without it being too crowded.

We have ten-foot ceilings throughout our entire house and have decided to no longer waste that space! We plan to build bookcases that hang on the top 5 feet of the walls of the school/craft/sewing room and the top 3-4 feet of the walls in our hall. Oh! the storage space that would create!! Plenty of space for books and “stuff”. We saw some nice decorative boxes at IKEA that would work well for storage up on the very top shelves and not look messy.

The closet will need definite work but I think doing these things will greatly help in making the space we have more useable. It would be sooooo nice to be able to leave out our sewing machines and them not be in the way (dining room table!). We already have the tools we need to build the bookshelves, just need the lumber. We will probably wait until after the holidays as this is such a busy time. I would like to find some desks or table now if I could … we have some gift sewing to do so the sooner the better.

I would love to hear any suggestions that any of you want to share … about our plans, helpful suggestions or lessons you learned the hard way while doing something similar. The store name or website where I can get some desks or tables would be wonderful!! Lol

Oh it sounds heavenly!

Your room sounds just wonderful!!! Full of color and nice things! We have a whole downstairs that needs remodelling before we can use it and I dream of all the different things we can do. :o)

And just how will you reach all those tall shelves????? I'm envisioning a ladder used in the library of my dreams. ;o)
