Finding Our Way

Geography website

jayfromcleveland posted an interesting set of statistics on American children and their lack of geographical knowledge. I'm afraid the same can be said for most British kids. We recently were given a great geography website by a retired headmaster who attends our church here in the UK. He is very interested in, and supportive of, our homeschool endeavours. The site is all free, and it offers amazing games for geography of the USA and all regions of the world. Our children use it almost daily. If you want to improve your child's knowledge of US states, or capitals, or countries of the world, this is a good place to start.

Hi Bruce, I check a few of those games, thanks for the tip. The chemistry games were pretty lame -- flash anim aids to rote memorization it seemed. I tried a couple of the geography and was quite appalled at how poorly I did on Europe. It appears I'm weak with these little po-dunk fiefdoms (The Grand Duchy of Fenwick or whatever) and it looks like I haven't learned the post-commie map very well at all. It would be the same with Africa I'm sure. But if you show the world map from 1970 (when I learned all that) I'm sure I could ace the test!

That's another nice thing about America -- ever since we finished stealing the continent from the Indians, the map hasn't changed so it's easier to remember. And we don't need to worry about Nebraska invading Kansas, or Minnesota dividing into 37 new "breakaway republics"!!!
