Surviving the after weekends...
Is it only my house that the weekends seem to destroy my home? Its like Monday is my "rescue" day. Sigh. I wish I was better at maintenance. I just can't seem to keep up. I don't know what to do, you know? I've tried different routines, and it seems no matter what I fall behind. Fly lady didn't work for me either and it was probably the simplest of things. Anyone reading this, HOW DO YOU DO IT???? Please, let me in on the secret! I'm thinking of going through the kids toy box again. Its literally over flowing with stuff and they don't play with all of it. I wish their birthdays weren't right before and right after Xmas. (Nov 18, Jan 18) I think I'm going to ask my In Laws that they buy books and clothes for birthdays and toys on Xmas, or vise verse. Maybe that will control the growing amount of toys. (You'd think that toys were like rabbits!) So here we go again. It seems to take me the whole week to get the house together and after the weekend I'm starting all over again. I have a small apartment with too much stuff in it. And no matter how much I organize or de-clutter, it grows back magically. I'm up for all and any suggestions. How do I better organize my time, and become more efficient in my cleaning and home keeping?

Dear Amanda~ Don't give up! I know exactly what you mean about the weekends. I also am doing flylady. And it is the easiest. But my problem? I don't like being told by someone else what to do, honestly.
It sounds like you and I are in the same boat as far as clutter and routines goes. I want to encourage you. Living in an apartment is the hardest, for lack of storage.
Just ask yourself what is the LEAST you can live without?
And as far as TOYS goes... I HEAR YA! I have 4 children, and when they were small (all teens now) The TOYS OWNED US! We had to feed them batteries, DR. them and keep them cleaned up. The best part was when I finally saw the error of having a TOY BOX-- i bought shelves and only kept the favorites and ONLY what would fit on the shelf.
You may not have that luxury of new shelves, but... your smart improvise. Only keep what you and your children love.
Aren't grandparents the greatest? instead of toys for birthdays, suggest maybe, gift cards or movie tickets. I just bought my two grandsons (their birthdays are the 7 & 8 of January and they are brothers, too) for their b-days Sonic Cards-- for afternoon slushes or whatever.
I hope that helps--- maybe not practical advice, but I try to be encouraging.
I'm putting you on my friends list and will check back periodically, ok?

That is funny my monkey's b-day is Nov. 18th and my dad's b-day is Jan 18th too!!
About the house upkeep. You aren't alone. I have looked at many books and mags for help and try and use some of the ideas but ya, it doesn't always seem to work.
Our biggest problem is paper accumulation. I just dont know what to do with all of it. With everything else I have learned that if it hasn't been used after a few months then it needs to go. That is all the advise I think I can give.
Hu, in a way you are lucky you are in a apartment because we have a garrage and that is where everything that we dont use seems to go for long periods of time before we finally get rid of the stuff we got rid of ;O)
What is Fly Lady? I dont think I have ever heard of her/it.
Good Luck, you can do it!!

In our home we go through toys every 6 mnths (sometimes sooner) my kiddos are 10 & 6 during our decluttering day they will sort through toys they want to keep and toys they are willing to give away. If they choose something that I would like to hang on to then it MY responsibility to store it. My kiddos have containers to keep things in.... for example
DS 10 - has a clear container for his "Hot Wheels"
clear container for his army men, cowboys and indians and knights
these containers are clearly marked and stack too.
We also have a tub for wooden train set, Rescue Heros
DD 6 has same containers for her things too.
Our goal every year is NOT to buy items that require batteries, we have been able to do that for 2 Christmas's.
I set Tuesdays aside and we clean house ALL morning, this helps me but, it has also made the kids appreciate what mom does more! My husband is off on Tuesdays and so it is a family cleaning day and then in the afternoons we read and play games.
Something we do also is our children participate in sports such as ds basketball , and a swim team and dd is soccer and basketball and they know that this cost mom and dad $, this is also a gift to them. Birthdays are celebrated with them choosing the resturant and a small gift and Christmas is down sized too.
At 3:00 everyday we stop school and do a quick clean up and pick up of the house, this helps out too!
