Child-Centered Parenting

Posted in Parent-Centered Parenting

Though most would deny it, I think most modern Christian parents are more "Child-Centered" than our ancestors.  Before the Industrial Revolution, husband, wife and all able children were actively involved in the family business.  All family members were busy from dawn to dusk with the various household duties.  Children were assets, not liabilities.  They contributed to the household economy, rather than drawing from it.  Though there was a great deal of active discipleship, much of the children's training was gained while quietly observing and assisting their parents in their daily duties and responsibilities.  Children adopted their parents hobbies and interests.  There were no activities apart from the parents.  The idea of running the children around to sporting events, dance, gymnastics and/or the MALL, would be completely foreign and baffling to our ancestors.  Today, your average Christian child suffers from too much free time and too much autonomy from his/her parents.  This is what I mean by "Child-Centered Parenting".  The modern day "soccer mom" would better serve her family by embarking on an entrepreneurial venture and employing her children's time in it's service.  Rather than mom wasting her God-given time following her children around, why not be productive and let your children follow you around.  There's no time to waste.  Let's take dominion and subdue the earth.  May our children follow, learn and multiply our efforts to the glory of God.
