Mom, why don't you wear dresses?

Posted in Personal

That was the question asked to me today by my twelve year old daughter on the way to church. I didn't really have an answer other than the fact that I don't own any dresses. I even got married in pants, but that is another story all in itself. So I started thinking, how am I going to raise a young lady, when her mother lives in capris.

Then tonight I came across a blog with the quiz How Girly Are You. I took the quiz and I scored a 12 percent, which basically means I am a boy! That is terrible. How can I expect my girls to grow into young ladies if  I am their biggest influence and I don't own a dress. I am not saying that wearing dresses automatically means you are more ladylike, but maybe a step in the right direction.

So now I am off to bed, to ponder whether or not to buy a dress tomorrow when I am shopping in town.

Maybe my husband can comment on this one, he has never complained about my lack of dress wearing, but he isn't a big complainer so who knows!

I feel like a female impersonator in a dress. Whenever I DRESS up - in a dress that is - I feel like I am pretending to be somebody I am not. I have on occasion worn a skirt - like today - and that was okay - very casual demin kinds of things. But, why do you have to be a certain way to be womanly? Why do you have to be lacy to be feminine? No frills for me - I am a t-shirt and jeans kind of girl. I figure if God made me less "girly", and He isn't convicting a change - then He likes me this way! I will work from there! I think you should to. You can train ladies - homemakers, future wives and mothers without all the feminine wiles. Charm is deceptive and beauty if fleeting but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised!!!

Hi from a dress wearer!! I wear a dress everyday and can tell you -- you get used to wearing them! I used to be an overall jean girl -- I LOVED them!! But now, alas, it is dresses and skirts for me. Try it - you might just like it!

I am off to take that quiz.....

Jul. 16, 2006 - Hilarious quiz!

I came out 28% girly. I guess I need to get more manicures and take better care of my feet! My husband's favorite outfit for me would be jeans and a white t-shirt. Next would be a long, flowing skirt and a white t-shirt. But mostly, he just loves for me to be who I am, regardless of what I wear!

Jul. 17, 2006 - Interesting thought

And one that has me thinking too. I have a couple of skirts. Literally. And a pair of jeans that I live in. And three pairs of shoes. Does that mean my girls will grow up without knowing what a feminine heart looks like? I hope not. Because it is certainly the unseen that contributes to beauty. However, I am wondering if alot of our intolerance to girly things is because they all seem so WEAK. They aren't all though, and apart from those that are purely ridiculous (here I refer to the likes of gossip mags) I know I am challenged to let down my super strong capable guard and explore being a (vulnerable) girl again. It is indeed an interesting thought. One I will be considering as I remain firm in my unending resolve to attend first and foremost to the appearance of my heart. But does a soft heart within reflect in our chosen attire???? I wonder. Perhaps the leanings of our natures is a thing to go with, rather than fight - perhaps being a tomboy is a reflection of the honest way we like to live, finding it unecessary to try to be something else for approval? And perhaps the odd brush with femininity would feel nice - I personally try to strike a balance of both! Sometimes a scary look!!!! :)

Jul. 17, 2006 - Girly Quiz

Posted by GenesisfamilyDad
That quiz wasn't about biblical girl/womanhood. I wouldn't put any credence in a quiz with questions about tans, cheerleading, Hot Topic, and cell phones as a parameter to measure "girliness" (how do you spell that). I don't think dresses make you more girly but in today's culture of androgyny they do send a clearer message of femininity. If that's what you're shooting for - Wear more dresses. You know how I used to dress - What is the message you want to send? Ladies, I know I'm a man so maybe I shouldn't weigh in on this - you might want to ask your husband's what they think about this topic. Please don't take this as a response to your posts just a communication to my wife sent with utmost respect.

Jul. 17, 2006 - Simple really

My husband's comment to this was that he feels that femininity has nothing whatsoever to do with whether a woman wears jeans or a dress. Her attraction lies in the nature of her spirit.

What an interesting issue to ponder and discuss. I only wear dresses to church. Otherwise, I always wear pants. Actually, I'm not much of a hip dresser at all...for several reasons...a. budget b. I just don't feel comfortable putting my emphasis on me and what I wear. I want to be clean, presentable and modest. If it's pants or if it's dresses that achieves that, then so be it. I'm going to bring this up with DH...I don't think we've ever discussed this.

Hmm, come to think of it, we have discussed DD5's dress code quite a bit.

BTW, I ROFLOL'd at your "I don't refrigerate art." You got me good on that one :)

I like to where dresses because they make me feel prettier. Unfortunately, though, I've been either too pregnant to fit into my dresses or nursing for the past several years and couldn't do it. Oh well. I got to wear a couple between my last one weaning and this one making me too big! My other beef with dresses is that I can't find shoes that fit comfortably enough to want to wear them all the time with dresses.

I think your dh wrote a valid comment. I like that he reads your blog. My dh never reads mine - but he lives at home and gets to see me everyday.
