The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia would like to thank you for your interest in our Open House, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2009.
The Open House demonstrates the exciting and rewarding aspects of a career in veterinary medicine. There will be many demonstrations and tours showing the diverse career choices from which graduates in veterinary medicine may choose.
Guided tours of the College and Teaching Hospital facilities will be available throughout the day. These tours will feature both the large and small animal teaching hospitals.
Interesting exhibits will focus on topics such as the life of a veterinary student, computers in veterinary medicine, animal behavior, equine reproduction, herd health and others.
Admission to the Open House is FREE and the public is invited. Please pass along this information to individuals or groups in your community or school who might be interested in learning more about the rapidly changing and scientifically challenging world of veterinary medicine.
I am the program coordinator at the Fortson 4-H Center in Hampton, GA. We run an environmental education program during the school year. In an effort to make our programs more accessible to the homeschool community we are having our first annual homeschool day on April 6th. I think this will be a fun and educational opportunity that you will want to get your families involved with.
If you would like more information you can visit our website, www.fortson4h.org. There is a link on our homepage to information about the homeschool day.
Our next Homeschool Day is Friday, December 12, from 10:00 AM -- 2:00 PM. This year, we've decided to expand our popular "Christmas at Tullie" program into "Holidays in History." Experience both an 1860s pioneer Christmas at our Tullie Smith Farm and a 1930s Christmas at the Swan House mansion!
Activities and demonstrations at the Tullie Smith Farm include blacksmithing, open-hearth cooking, candle dipping, historic toys and games, tours of house, and much more.
At the Swan House, enjoy a fun lesson on proper 1930s party etiquette, period games, and tours of the elegantly decorated mansion.
Before you head over to Swan House, make sure you stop by the craft table to make a gift for your gracious hostess. The craft table also offers many other historic crafts and activities. Bring your camera so you can take pictures of your kids in pioneer clothing!
While you're at the History Center, make sure to see our newest traveling exhibitions Norman Rockwell's Home for the Holidays and Jim Henson's Fantastic World. If you need a break, take a load-off and watch the video "My Christmas Soldier" about German POWs arriving in a small Georgia town during WWII.
Admission to Homeschool Days is $7 for nonmembers; $5 for children of members; and free for adult members. Children 3 and under are free. Discounted rates are available for groups with ten or more children. For more information or to make group reservations, please call 404.814.4018 or email Homeschool@AtlantaHistoryCenter.com .
I also wanted to let you know about our Pearl Harbor School Day on Friday, December 5, from 10:00 AM -- 1:00 PM. Commemorate the anniversary of Pearl Harbor and enjoy this rare opportunity to speak with WWII veterans and hear their personal stories. Students enlist in officers' camp, meet with WWII reenactors, learn about rationing through hands-on activities, and more. Admission for Pearl Harbor School Day is $7 per person. One chaperone is admitted free per 5 students. For more information on this program or to make a reservation, call 404.814.4110.
We hope to see you in December! Please let me know if you have any questions.
Wishing you and yours all the best this holiday season,
-Andrea and the AHC staff
