Anger Q

Anyone have any ways to calm down when you're really, really mad?  I haven't found a way to calm myself down.  I've already tried counting to ten and breathing deeply but it just doesn't do it for me.  If you have any ways on cooling down, please tell me.

Actually, when you begin counting, it activates the part of your brain that is logical. When you become emotional, a tiny part of your brain begins firing emotional messages. Most people act on those emotions with angry words, tears, panic, etc. Next time, try counting up to 50 or even 100. It might even help to focus on individual objects as you count, i.e. leaves on a tree.

Last month I was stranded in an airport when a suitcase was found with a loaded gun in it. All the travelers in the entire airport had to be evacuated. I stood there in this enormous crowd and was on the verge of feeling pretty panicky, as you can imagine! I remembered what I had learned about counting and how it helps activate the logical side of my brain so emotions don't take over. I began counting light fixtures, and by the time I got to 60 or so, I felt extremely calm. It also helped that I was praying as well. :o)

Everyone in the world struggles with anger, and you're smart to realize the need to control IT rather than letting IT control you. :o)
