May The Force Be With You

The River:

Today, it being 85 degrees Fahrenheit, my family and I went to a river down  the road from our house. It's always fun to swim in the river, 'cause it's hard to keep a pool as clear as it is. Anyway, about halfway through our afternoon, I went over to where water collected in the huge rock that is the "beach" and looked around. the water is very dirty in that spot, 'cause it doesn't get any circulation.

I was looking around, and spotted what was either a baby turtle or a leaf. I went over and pulled on what was either it's tail or the leaf stem, and it turned out to be the former. Excited, I brought it over to show the rest of my family. Before I revealed it to them, the following conversation took place:

Me: "Guess what I got. (I don't use very good grammar in everyday life)"

Dad: "A frog?"

Me: "No, a turtle!"

Dad: "Maybe it's a snapper."

I opened my hands, and sure enough, it was a snapper! It took my Dad a little while to convince me, but it was! After everybody had seen it, I returned it to it place in the pone of scum.

Othello:

I just read the play Othello by Shakespeare in mondernized English. I love Shakespeare, and likewise I liked this book. I enjoyed how he makes the evil ones so evil you just love to hate them!

Game Programing:

My carrer is going to (soon, I hope) be game programing. I have found a good game engine (Torque) and a good 3D modeler. I also have my eye on two books, 3D Game Programing All-In-One and Advanced 3D Game Programing All-In-One, both by Finny.

Do the readers of this blog think that it's wrong to program or play violent (blood, etc.) computer games?

Cheers,

Gollum

I think that we should not lust after violence. Jesus tells us to put our minds on all that is good. Games, movies and other stuff that glorify sensless brutality just for the fun of it are not good. It habituates the person to violence and then they can more readily accept it in real life.

The early 1960's is when the era of gore lust started, and it has got progresively worse and exposes younger and younger people all the time. For the response of unhabituated people, the reaction of my family to the H.G. Wells classic, The Time Machine, is a good example. The monsters were rather corny and yet most of the crew had problems sleeping.

Many other children these days subsist on a constant diet of glorifed gore. I shudder to think how they might react in certain situations. Luckily, that stuff bothered me so much I avoided it during the last 30 years. I think if you fill your head with good things it affects you better. Remember the old adage,

i.e., garbage in gets you garbage out.

Man, you're going to hell just for thinking about it! ;>

Just kidding. I think the answer is "It depends." I gladly bought my son DeerHunter to play occasionally; technically it's a violent game with blood, but he continues to display an attitude of respect and care for animals. When I was kid, I played games like Rush 'N Attack - they weren't very graphic, and they really weren't set in a first-person perspective, so I don't get the impression that they affected me much. However, in more recent years I've tried the more graphic, first-person games, and it seems to me like after a while the user would be de-sensitized to violence ... in other words, more likely to commit violent acts or not defend someone being mistreated. Like the previous poster, I would rather see people have tender hearts than have them cheer for gore.

Good luck in your future career!
