Summer Time on Guam
It's funny to think about Summer time on Guam - the land of perpetual summer weather! But homeschoolers do seem to change their schedules once the summer months roll around. Guam comes to life with many activities for children - most of them geared towards keeping the public school children occupied over the summer months (May to July) - but there is no reason why homeschoolers can't get in on the activities!
The University of Guam offers many special summer programs. They have a Theater/Art Camp for children aged 5 to 16. The camps are divided by age group and offer an opportunity for children to act and perform a play for the community at the end of the session. This year's play will feature music from the famous School House Rock videos, which many of us parents remember viewing on Saturday morning cartoons.
The UOG cooperative extension program also offers many sports camps, fisheries camps and other day camps that interest children of all ages.
Aside from these camps there are also various Vacation Bible Schools offered at the different churches on island. Some years there are only a few of these offered and others there is an abundance of VBS's available. This seems to be a year of abundance. If you listen to KTWG's AM800 radio broadcasts you can find out just where and when a VBS will be held.
The Guam Homeschool Association continues to have their support group meetings, with special guests and tips on homeschooling. Last month's guest was Dr. Youngberg of the Seventh Day Adventist's Wellness Program who gave the parents wonderful tips on feeding our children healthy foods that minimize health risks later in life. Getting your child started on a healthy diet at a young age should be the goal of all parents. July's special guest will be a local archaeologist who will offer some hands-on teaching for the children as well as the parents.
On the last Saturday of July, the GHSA will be hosting a mini curriculum/book sale to help parents get rid of last years books they no longer need and offer new parents an opportunity to purchase last minute curriculum materials for the upcoming school year. Any newcomers to Guam are welcome to contact me at 734-3748 for more information on these activities.
Summer usually also means a new influx of military families to Guam. I hope that anyone in our special services who will be coming to Guam will see this blog and know that homeschooling is a viable option on our beautiful island.
