Adding Visual Interest with the Rule of Thirds
“What is the rule of thirds?” you may ask. Our natural tendency is to put the subject in the center of our viewfinder, however the rule of thirds is a photographic composition tool that says if you break down your image into nine equal quadrants (three lines down and three lines across) your image will be more visually appealing if the points of interest are at the intersections.
Let’s make it visual. Imagine a grid divided into nine equal parts, like this:

In these photos the subject is not centered, but placed at the intersection of the lines.

Today’s cameras can help you achieve the rule of thirds in your photos. Check your user’s manual or camera menu to see if you can activate a grid in your viewfinder. Be careful to make sure your camera is focusing on the right spot. If your camera allows you to shoot in manual modes, you can probably move the focus to exactly where you want it. Also, you can crop your photos to achieve this effect in the editing process.
As with many rules, the rule of thirds is made to be broken and not appropriate for all photos. Just use your best judgement and see how you can make this composition trick work for you and your photos.

About Me
My name is Hannah, but I am also known as Missy Lou. I am a 13yo homeschool high school student. I love the Lord with all my heart and hope you will see Him in me. I am the oldest of 5 kids and love my family very much!
However, I am not a perfect person. Jesus Christ is my role model and I strive to please Him only. I truly hope you are blessed by your visit here. It is my prayer that this blog glorifies the Lord in every way.
I enjoy sewing, crocheting, cooking, baking, and looking after my 2yo brothers. They have made such a difference in my life! They are constantly teaching me many things! My sisters and Mama are my best friends. Although I didn't always think mamas and sisters were to be best friends.

I found your blog through the backyard. I'm taking a very long blogging break right now but I'm still commenting and pming...
I have a Canon Powershot IS S1 that I got for my birthday in January and I've taken probably over 2000 pics since then... (but once I filled up the camera card and then accidently emptied it without saving anything... UGH!) My mom's camera has a grid like this, but mine (sadly) doesn't... It does make the picture look a lot nicer when its not always centered!
I've enjoyed looking at a few of your old posts! You take great pictures!
Do you always wear skirts, or did you just wear them for the challenge? the girls in our family wear them all the time. No pants or culottes. (sp?)
Well, that wasn't supposed to be quite so long... :-)
Amy
P.S. I think you are very pretty!
