HEARTH Fund Caucus Training This Weekend
The Hearth Fund is a small donor committee that was established in 2004 to help elect Christian candidates that support parents right to choose how to educate their children. In the 2006 election cycle, 13 out of 16 candidates they supported won their elections. They have arranged to have several caucus training sessions the first two of which are this weekend. We hope you will attend and bring your kids, because this is a great civics lesson in how the political process works in Colorado.
Quoting from the email sent out about it, the pertinent information is below:
The first is on Friday, October 5, 7:00 PM, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2226 N Corona St. in Colorado Springs.
The location for the the Saturday session, originally scheduled in Parker, has been moved to the Highlands Ranch area. It will be from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM. We will get the exact location out to you soon.
Please set aside 90 minutes for these important training sessions. The February 5 caucus date may seem like a long way off, but the only way we can be fully prepared is to start working on it right now.

Home Education done by "Wannabe" teachers
So the head custodian at Brownstown Elementary School in Southern Illinois is qualified to comment on whether or not home education is a viable option, but parents who home educate their children are "wannabe" teachers and amateurs.
Read the NEA's proposed resolutions for yourself. What on earth makes homeschooling such a repugnant idea to the NEA? If they truly are about educating children, shouldn't they be thrilled that homeschooled students are doing so well?

Mardy Freeman
We were treated to an uplifting, humble and sweet lady of God last evening at our Parents Meeting. Her honesty and transparency were such a blessing to us!
With rapt attention from our audience of homeschool moms and dads, she shared about raising children of character and how the Lord taught her through her parenting mistakes a better way, HIS way, to parent and help raise children who seek to serve the Lord and honor their parents. She also shared about marital lessons learned through the 28 years she and her husband, Bill, have been married.

Tumbling Along
My great-Uncle Willie ran a lapidary shop. Uncle Willie really enjoyed making jewelry and knick-knacks out of polished stones. Uncle Willie and his wife, Grace, took daily walks where they would collect rocks. It didn’t matter if they were at home in Minnesota, or on vacation somewhere else, they filled their pockets with stones as they strolled along.
The process of getting the grime off of the stones so that the beauty underneath can be exposed is a long one, requiring a great deal of patience.
The first stage of rock polishing is called the “shaping stage.” This process mixes stones of different sizes along with grit and COLD water into a tumbling barrel. This barrel needs to be three-quarters of the way full so that the process of the rocks tumbling around, knocking into each other and into the sides of the barrel reveals the shape of the stone. The barrel needs to be that crowded and filled with various sizes of stones so that the shaping is true and doesn’t conform to the sides of the barrel.
Did you know that the rocks need to tumble for five days? Imagine how many times those stones are knocked around tumbling into each other and the sides of the tumbler! After tumbling, the stones need to be sifted, and washed so that the grit is completely removed. It is very important that the grit all be washed off. Rock tumbling enthusiasts call this process “removing sludge.”
Stages two and three are very similar to stage one, except a more refined grit is used each time. Both stages require the rocks to tumble eight days each.
Stage four requires a great deal of patience. After carefully removing the sludge, as even the tiniest amount of grit will not allow the rocks to polish correctly, the rocks are again placed into the tumbler with cerium oxide and water. The rocks tumble for 48 hours at a time and then are checked. If they are not polished to your satisfaction, then they are tumbled for another 48 hours. That process is repeated until when you check on the rocks they shiny. THEN -- you put them back in and let them tumble four more days!
Doesn’t this whole process remind you of how the Lord works in our lives? First, we come into the world as unpolished, grimy stones. Then, the Lord cleans us up with water and life’s experiences (the tumbler and rocks), which we often need to repeat to really “get it.” Removing the sludge again and again is the ongoing work of sanctification.
Our strength of character doesn’t just appear one day. It needs to be tested many times to determine its stamina. Life’s experiences help to rub away the grime so we can exhibit grace just as we have been graciously granted mercy by our Father in Heaven.

Happy 220th Anniversary of the Signing of the Constitution of the United States
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
Happy 220th anniversary of the signing of the Consititution of the United States of America!
What an interesting document... I pray you will study it, preserve it and protect it! Having had members of my family served in the military in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm, some who gave their lives, this document is precious to me, especially as a Christian, because my right be a Christian unfettered comes from that document. Yes, we live in the left hand kingdom ruled by men God has allowed to govern us; however, my hope and faith is in the right hand kingdom of God whose Son made the ultimate sacrifice for us all so that we might have salvation and eternal life.

The Legend of the Firefish
One of our members suggested that we have this author speak at one of our Parents Meetings. However, due to an already full schedule that's been advertised, it won't work.
In trying to arrange it, I had the pleasure of being introduced to the author via email and blogs. Writers are compelled to write, even if people aren't reading. Something inside them just bursts to be put into a written format. I think we can see that with the explosion of blogs -- people are writing! I think that's wonderful.

If ever the saying "been there and done that" had genuine meaning, these two women are living proof. From the "am I doing enough?" fears which nag every homeschool mother to the joyous benediction of "thank you mom for all you did," Amanda and Jane have walked where you walk!
Between them, Jane Lambert and Amanda Bennett have more than 35 years of homeschooling experience. Amanda has a daughter through college and Vet school, a son through college and well established in his own business and she continues to homeschool her youngest son through high school. Jane has two daughters through college, both happily married, and she plans to keep an active hand in homeschooling with her five grandchildren.
After meeting as homeschool curriculum authors nearly 15 years ago at a convention in Florida, these two women have become close friends, sharing their victories and their trials with one another in person, on the phone and by email on a weekly basis.
They know the ins and outs of learning styles, teaching techniques and student motivation. More importantly, they also know the power of prayer-- to complete the homeschooling marathon, to strengthen homeschool marriages (Jane has been married for 36 years and Amanda for 28), to persevere through both the terrible twos and the terrifying teens, to walk through health challenges and to live with the financial stresses of being a single-income family.

Gentleness and Respect
We started homeschooling in 1995 because we knew we could provide a better education than what the local public school was offering. At least that’s what we told everyone. Though the years our answer changed as we grew more confident in sharing that we did so because we wanted our children’s days steeped in His truth. We designed their education to be centered on the fact that, as Christians who are redeemed by Christ’s blood as propitiation for our sins by grace alone, all of our learning is viewed from that Christian perspective (worldview). (Romans 3: 23-26, 1 John 2:2, 1 John 4:10)
I recently read an article by Kim d’Escoto (http://www.crosswalk.com/homeschool/11547708/) that advocates turning innocent questions about how or why we homeschool into opportunities to share that you do so as a Christian because you cannot send your children to be indoctrinated with secular humanism and a complete denial of Christ as Savior of all mankind. Depending on how you say that, it may seem like a confrontational answer. Learning to give an answer for that hope within us (1Peter 3:15-16) with “gentleness and respect” is a skill that we should learn.
It can be difficult to share His truth with complete strangers, who probably weren’t expecting an answer like Kim suggests. We have been sharing that truth with strangers as the Spirit has led us to, and found surprisingly (mostly) positive responses.
My family has been involved in the advocacy of parental rights to choose their child’s education since we moved back to Colorado in 1997. We’ve never found it effective to denigrate someone else’s choice, which, just because it is different, doesn’t make it wrong. Again, that phrase of “gentleness and respect” comes into play so that while we advocate and promote home education, we don’t alienate others who have chosen a different path.
I pray that your homeschooling adventures this year are filled with His grace, peace, mercy and love!

Homeschool Artist Showcase, November 2007
Colorado Springs 2007 Homeschool Artist Showcase
Every year, local school districts display student art work at our local libraries.
We thought, "Why not have a public art show for local homeschoolers?"
That is exactly what we are doing!
And we would like you to join us! It's free!
Sand Creek Library, a branch of Pikes Peak Library District, has given us the entire month of November
to display the art work and creativity of the local homeschooling community.
And they are hosting an opening reception. And the show will be juried!
Ribbons will be awarded, plus there will be a Peoples Choice Award. Doesn't this sound like fun?
The show will open on November 1st and run through the 30th.
Art that was created by you or your children in the last two years,
is eligible to be in the Homeschool Artist Showcase.*
Sand Creek located at 1821 South Academy Blvd.
Why are we doing this?
"For the last two years, my kids and I have entered the creative arts competition at the El Paso County Fair. We have had a wonderful time creating, preparing and entering our art projects. The experience and reward of seeing our work on display, and the joy of getting ribbons has created memories we will never forget. The folks at Sand Creek Library said it’s time to have a Homeschool Art Show right here!
We are hoping that this first "Homeschool Artist Showcase" will whet your appetites for art creation and competition and also help you prepare for next year's fair! This year there were over 700 entries in the creative arts and cooking competition at the fair, but we were told that in years past it was not uncommon to have 2500 entries.
Here is a chance for you to "practice" for the next County Fair or just join us and have fun displaying your creativity. Homeschoolers in the El Paso County and immediate area are welcome to participate in the Homeschool Artist Showcase” ~ Mrs. Nancy Baetz, Homeschool Artist Showcase Coordinator**

Cathedral Building
Perspective: The Invisible Woman

It started to happen gradually. One day I was walking my son Jake to school. I was holding his hand and we were about to cross the street when the crossing guard said to him, "Who is that with you, young fella?"
"Nobody," he shrugged.
Nobody? The crossing guard and I laughed. My son is only 5, but as we crossed the street I thought, "Oh my goodness, nobody?"
I would walk into a room and no one would notice. I would say something to my family - like "Turn the TV down, please" - and nothing would happen. Nobody would get up, or even make a move for the remote. I would stand there for a minute, and then I would say again, a little louder, "Would someone turn the TV down?" Nothing.
Just the other night my husband and I were out at a party. We'd been there for about three hours and I was ready to leave. I noticed he was talking to a friend from work. So I walked over, and when there was a break in the conversation, I whispered, "I'm ready to go when you are." He just kept right on talking.
I'm invisible.
It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone and ask to be taken to the store. Inside I'm thinking, "Can't you see I'm on the phone?" Obviously not. No one can see if I'm on the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me at all.
I'm invisible.
Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more: Can you fix this? Can you tie this? Can you open this?
Some days I'm not a pair of hands; I'm not even a human being. I'm a clock to ask, "What time is it?" I'm a satellite guide to answer, "What number is the Disney Channel?" I'm a car to order, "Right around 5:30, please."
I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history and the mind that graduated summa cum laude - but now they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again.
She's going¸ she's going¸ she's gone!
One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return of a friend from England. Janice had just gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed in. I was sitting there, looking around at the others all put together so well. It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself as I looked down at my out-of-style dress; it was the only thing I could find that was clean. My unwashed hair was pulled up in a banana clip and I was afraid I could actually smell peanut butter in it. I was feeling pretty pathetic, when Janice turned to me with a beautifully wrapped package, and said, "I brought you this."
It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe. I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read her inscription: "To Charlotte, with admiration for the greatness of what you are building when no one sees."
In the days ahead I would read - no, devour - the book. And I would discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work:
No one can say who built the great cathedrals - we have no record of their names.
These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never see finished.
They made great sacrifices and expected no credit.
The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything.
A legendary story in the book told of a rich man who came to visit the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam. He was puzzled and asked the man, "Why are you spending so much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof? No one will ever see it."
And the workman replied, "Because God sees."
I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place. It was almost as if I heard God whispering to me, "I see you, Charlotte. I see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does. No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcake you've baked, is too small for me to notice and smile over. You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will become."
At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction. But it is not a disease that is erasing my life. It is the cure for the disease of my own self-centeredness. It is the antidote to my strong, stubborn pride.
I keep the right perspective when I see myself as a great builder. As one of the people who show up at a job that they will never see finished, to work on something that their name will never be on. The writer of the book went so far as to say that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree.
When I really think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friend he's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving, "My mom gets up at 4 in the morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a turkey for three hours and presses all the linens for the table." That would mean I'd built a shrine or a monument to myself. I just want him to want to come home. And then, if there is anything more to say to his friend, to add, "You're gonna love it there."
As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're doing it right. And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible women.

Whole-Hearted Child Home Education Workshop, September 7 and 8, Colorado Springs
Discover the joy and freedom of home schooling the WholeHearted way. It’s about discipleship. It’s about real books. It’s about real life. It’s all about your family.
Your children are your most important disciples. In this workshop, we’ll explain a natural, commonsense way to fulfill God’s biblical design for living and learning together as a family. Once you understand the easily-remembered five focused areas of study that define the WholeHearted Learning model, you will be able to implement them to liberate learning in your own home. Home education will never be the same for you or your children. This model has been taught since 1994 to thousands of families, and is fully explained in the Clarksons’ popular book, Educating the WholeHearted Child. Come and join us as we explore how to live and learn together at home, and how to raise wholehearted Christian children.

Workshop Registration:
By August 31, $30.00 individual / $40.00 couple (High Country members: $25.00 / $35.00)
After August 31, $10.00 late registration fee
Registration prices include a workshop notebook and a light lunch for each attendee. The Friday evening workshop session begins at 7:00pm and is open to non-registered attendees (bring your spouse or a friend). The Saturday workshop begins at 9:00am and requires a fully paid registration.

About the Speakers:
Clay and Sally Clarkson started Whole Heart Ministries in 1994 with a heart and vision to encourage and equip Christian parents to raise wholehearted children to serve Christ. Clay, an author and teacher, and a graduate of Denver Seminary, directs WHM. His books include Our 24 Family Ways, Heartfelt Discipline and, with Sally, Educating the WholeHearted Child. Sally is a speaker and teacher, and author of Seasons of a Mother’s Heart, The Mission of Motherhood, The Ministry of Motherhood, and The Mom Walk. Her speaking ministry and WholeHearted Mother conferences have encouraged thousands of families and Christian and home schooling mothers throughout the country and around the world. Clay and Sally have four wholehearted children, ages 12 to 23, all educated at home from birth. The Clarksons live in Monument.

a Christian Homeschool Support Group, established in 1996
at Rocky Mountain Calvary Chapel’s Power and Light Theater

(near Austin Bluffs Parkway and Academy Blvd.)
10 am to 11:30 am Introductory Meeting for New Homeschoolers or those curious about homeschooling begins with a 25-minute DVD from HSLDA (Homeschool Legal Defense Association), followed by an hour-long question and answer session fielded by a veteran panel of homeschool parents.
Lunch Break On your own
1 pm to 3 pm Enrichment Activities for Homeschool Families in the Pikes Peak Region (offered by homeschoolers)
1 -1:30 pm Co-op/Enrichment Programs in the Colorado Springs Area
1:30-2 pm Speech and Debate, Drama, Mimes, Chorales
2 – 2:30 pm Sporting Activities (Basketball, bowling, golf, etc.)
2:30 pm -3 pm Miscellaneous Activities (Science classes, etc.)
3 pm to 4 pm Visit with people representing the programs highlighted above

Area Support Groups will be represented as well so that
you can find just the right group to bless your family!
Please join us for all of the day, or the parts that interest you.
Your children are welcome to attend with you in the afternoon.
