Knitting for My Sanity

11:23 PM, Mar. 27, 2006

I’m very excited to share my obsession…I mean my hobby ;)… with you all! I have been crocheting for 16 years and knitting for 2.5 years. While I enjoy crocheting, since I’ve learned how to knit – I’ve been letting my hooks rust! And, when I recently learned that knitting uses less yarn…well, I think I’m knitting for good! However, I promise to share about crochet as well as knitting.

Are you wondering why I named this column "Knitting For My Sanity"? Well, I learned how to knit to help keep my hands and mind busy after losing our young son. Now I’m rarely seen without knitting needles in my hands! If I’m sitting – I’m knitting! In fact, just recently I found that knitting while my son does his daily seatwork makes the time fly and keeps my impatience in check!

I would love to hear from you! Do you love to knit/crochet too? Have you taught your homeschoolers to knit or crochet? Do you have a favorite link to share? Do you have a knitting/crocheting blog you’d like me to feature? Do you have a favorite tip? Please let me hear from you!

Blessings,
Amy Osborn ~

Hi! I recently started knitting...I started to teach myself Christmas of 2004, but didn't finish my first project until this last December. Since then I have been hooked (excuse the pun)! I have experimented with different stitches...made scarves (summer and winter), wrist warmers...I want to experiement more with these, dish towels...my favorite and have three requests for blankets! I can't wait to make my first tank top!
I too knit as I sit...I find my guilty pleasure of too much TV is no longer something to be guilty about! I absolutely love it! thanks for the blog...icart

Many years ago my neighbor who lived in the apartment above us, taught me how to knit. The funny thing is this is WITHOUT PATTERNS and she didn't know a lick of English!! Never the less, I somehow learned from her and am so grateful. I love the rythem the clicking of needles makes, very soothing.

I just went over and read your story about you all losing your son. It just brought me to tears. I think I might have read it before, but it just hit me like a ton of bricks again looking at that smiling baby picture. I praise God that He led you to a hobby that has helped you cope with your grief. You just keep knitting!

I look forward to learning more about knitting and seeing some projects you've done!
Blessings,

I am a knitting fan, too! Though right now, I'm working on a crochet project. I crochet much, much faster than I knit, so it appeals to my need for instant gratification.

I followed your link about your precious son. We lost our daughter Rebecca at 8 months old in September 2004. She was ill only briefly, she had a urinary tract infection that was undiagnosed. It just overwhelmed her little system. So much of what your wrote rang true for me. Our babies are so lucky- already at home with the Lord. I am squeezing your hand through cyber space and smiling at you, we know we will be with them again!! And we can sit on God's front porch, rocking our babies for all eternity and still have time to knit them cute sweaters.

I taught myself to knit this past New Year's Eve. Since then I've made several scarves and, thanks to links on your site, I just finished my first sock! I never go anywhere without my totebag that carries whatever project I'm currently working on. I have knit in the car, on the phone, at people's houses, in the doctor's office, and in the emergency room. I, too, find it soothing. I can't wait to learn more. :)

I'm looking forward to browsing your links and learning and trying more! My mother taught me to crochet when I was young and this past winter I taught myself to knit. My son (11) thought I'd never manage it but I did! My first project was a warm, rugged scarf of his choice of colors. (Leave it to my son to challenge me - he had to have two different colors - so I had to immediately get over the fear of messing up while changing back & forth between the two!)

He also dabbled with trying to learn. I think eventually he'll get the hang of it - meanwhile I think the practice is a real good thing for building patience and dexterity that may just end up showing up in his handwriting! ha, a mom can hope! :-)

I'm a recent convert too.

I started crocheting when I was...maybe 7 or 8? I tried to knit as a child, but was taught on #4 needles and found I didn't have the patience. It was way too slow for me when I was able to whip out stitches fast in crochet. I relearned last year, though, and found that with bigger needles and all of the fun yarns it was much more rewarding than what I'd done with crochet hooks in previous years.

I relearned at an odd time. I went to visit a friend, to help her pack for a move, and she taught me. I'd been knitting for about two days when Katrina hit and my memories of those first days consist of sitting on my friend's bed, watching the news for hours on end. You'd think it would sour me on knitting, but as you found, it did just the opposite. There was something about the rhythm and the product (I knitted scarf after scarf after scarf for Christmas gifts) that was both soothing and satisfying at a time when my heart was being torn for so many people.

Little did I know that only weeks later, having lost my wonderful mother-in-law in the interim, I'd be back in that same friend's house, again knitting for hours on end watching the news, as a Rita evacuee. That was even a bigger emotional challenge, requiring a bigger project, so I started a lap blanket for my mother. Knitting really did help me get through those days of being without a woman I adored and not knowing what we would be coming home to.

The end of the story is that Rita swung wide of us and even though there were many downed trees and a great deal of wind/tornado damage in our town, not one thing on our property was hurt. And yeah, I made a lot of progress on Christmas gifts while I spent those ten days banished from my own home.

Celebrating Jesus!
