My sister recently called me asking if I would pick something up for her. It was a tall cowboy, dressed in brown leather, armed with 2 shotguns and a hat full of whip cream! Well actually, she asked for a double shot, tall, mocha with whip cream but the first description is how I remembered her order without writing it down.
This is a prime example of how "mnemonics" ( a memory aide ) work. As the co-author of the mnemonic based program, Times Tales, this is a subject I get especially excited about. What's great about mnemonics is, it can be incorporated into everyday living, including school subjects. Have your children make up their own mnemonics for those things that just keep slipping their mind!
