Knitting Dishcloths

It is often the most abused tool in our kitchen – the dishcloth. And, while there is nothing exciting about them – I’ve found some great benefits to knitting them! For one thing, the dishcloth is a great way to try a new stitches or concepts without committing to a sweater or an afghan! Another benefit is that they knit up so quickly, I’ve been able to throw together a gift basket of kitchen goodies and knit up 1 or 2 dishcloths in a matter of hours to bless someone.

As I mentioned last week, the Dishcloth KnitAlong is my favorite knitalong. Twice a month we knit a new dishcloth – the first pattern of the month is a seasonal pattern and the second one is more of a challenge. Every day they email us about 10 rows of knitting to be completed. You can knit a bit each day or you can wait until the rows are all published and see what the dishcloth will look like before you start! In a week or so we have a completed dishcloth! Sometimes I’ve used them almost as soon as I’ve finished them, but others are in my gift closet waiting for the right person to bless! One word of warning about this KnitAlong group – they are CHATTY – I have to be set to ‘Special Notices’ to make sure I get the patterns, but not the chatting. Before I finish this – I want to clarify something that was mentioned in the comments after last week’s post – the dishcloth Knitalong I mentioned is the only one I know of where what you are knitting is a mystery! Usually you join a knitalong because you want to knit a certain pattern or item – and find a group of likeminded knitters. I hope I haven’t scared anyone off from a knitalong!

I challenge each of you knitters and crocheters to try a dishcloth this week – challenge yourself to try a new stitch that you might never try in a bigger project! And, be sure and let me know if you post pictures of your projects on your blog – I can’t wait to see them!!

question about dishcloths

What kind of yarn do you use to knit dishcloths? Does it need to be 100% cotton, etc? I am anxious to do some for gifts but don't have any 100% cotton yarn on hand. I guess a trip to town is in order, huh? Thanks for all the great info!

Yes, I prefer cotton - it knits up so nicely! And, JoAnn's, Walmart and Michaels - my local shops all carry it very inexpensively.
I have a friend who knit one in acrylic - or was it wool? - anyway, she definitely liked how that turned out!
I have some chenille that I'm planning to use for facecloths one of these days!

I am so hooked on dish cloths! They are fast, easy and FUN! I made myself one as an experiment. I fell in love with it. I made one for my aunt, who used to crochet blankets for all of us. Now I am working on a red one, white one and blue one for my mother-in-law for mother's day. I am even making a pair for my brother for his birthday in June!!! KNIT ON!! icart! BTW "sugar-n-cream" is really inexpensive ($1.27 at Hobby Lobby) and one ball makes a perfect sized dish towel!

I am going to look into this dishcloth knitalong. It sounds fun, maybe my daughter who knits can do it too.
I posted my newest WIP and also a pic of my finished work on matching outfits for my twins.
