It’s nearly the end of the school year, or perhaps you have already finished. Did it end with a bang or a whimper? Sometimes we all need an idea to spice up a hum drum day.
So, I’ve decided to have a contest for us to share our ideas. What do you do to spice up different subjects? I’ll share a few ideas each week this month, then invite you to write to me with your ideas. In a totally subjective process, I’ll pick the idea I thought was outstanding and send you a copy of my latest book, Homeschooling the Challenging Child.
We’ll publish every entry we receive on the Front Porch. This will extend for the next four weeks. Send your entries to christinefield@sbcglobal.net.
This week’s topic: Spelling! There is nothing more dreadful that studying for a spelling test, especially with children who struggle to spell. Here are some ideas to spice up study time:
* Toss a beanbag back and forth with your child. You say the first letter of the word, your child says the second, you say the third and so on.
* Using magnetic letters (like those purchased for refrigerator magnets) have your child spell out the words with magnets on the refrigerator or on a metal cookie sheet.
* Related to the above, write each spelling word on an index card. Put them in a baggie with the magnetic letters. When your child has a spare moment, give him the baggie with these materials and let him practice on his own.
* Have the student write the spelling word in fairly large letters in the center of a sheet of paper. Using colored markers, outline the word as many time as desired, creating a rainbow frame for the word. These look lovely and give added visual exposure to the word.
That’s it for this week. Send your entries to christinefield@bscglobal.net. Let’s spice it up!
