Transformity

Kim Shay’s favorite verse in the bible is from Romans 12:1-2

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

From that calling, Kim has developing her mission and her blog title Transformity.  It may not be a word in the dictionary but then if we’re called not to conform to this world, it makes perfect sense that it wouldn’t be there.  Kim's blog is a mixture of personal stories and essays on what she's currently thinking about.  

Recently, Kim has been working on a series of posts about courtship that would definitely qualify as transforming.  When she started writing on this subject she thought she could fit it all into one entry.  But like many bloggers, her need to “just say stuff” quickly transformed one post into four.  The series is an excellent primer on courtship.  She also takes the time to review the variety of books available on the subject.   Here’s an excerpt from part two, 

“I think the bible speaks clearly on the issue of how to guide and mentor our children, how to have good relationships with others and how to have a godly marriage. I believe that these foundational truths ought to be our starting point for deciding whether or not we want to pursue courtship with our families. Don’t simply read a book and decide that this is what you must do. Follow the example of others only after you have studied and prayed yourself.”

Transforming her mind to the image of Christ fits with her goal in homeschooling her children as well.  Kim admits to being a bit of a perfectionist.  Homeschooling her three children ages 16, 13, and 11 have given her ample opportunity to learn to be gentle and merciful.  She strives to celebrate their uniqueness without demanding perfection.  That's a struggle shared by many homeschooling parents.

Kim favors a classical approach inspired by The Well Trained Mind and has observed some great results in her children.  She states,

"I have seen that my children are developing critical thinking skills. My daughter doesn't simply accept things; she questions them. My 13 year old is getting that way, too. Also, the amount of literature they've been exposed to has really fostered a love of reading in our family."

Along with blogging and home schooling, Kim also enjoys playing the piano and singing with her daughter.  All the children play the piano as well.  Her husband contributes by writing many of the songs based on the scriptures.

Kim claims that she is a better verbal communicator than a written communicator.  She loves to “think on her feet”.  Well, that’s difficult to discern from her excellent blogging skills.  Then again maybe she blogs standing up!
