School Violence - Zero Tolerance or Daily Tolerance?

Some public schools now need "bully hotlines" - and teachers have zero ability to protect kids. Instead, they can refer the victim to the bully hotline. Teachers are becoming worn down. One reported last week that she was tired of hearing the f-word constantly used and threats of a broomstick being shoved....someplace. And this from young students.

I'm talking about elementary school. 5th graders.

"They hold me and then start punching me and then, if I fall, I cover my face and then they start kicking me," a boy told the NBC 10 Investigators.

"He's hysterically crying. He doesn't want to go to school. He doesn't want to go to sleep," Leslie said."Because I get scared (wondering), 'Are they gonna beat me up? How are they gonna beat me up? When are they gonna beat me up?'" the boy said. Leslie said she was in Smedley almost every week, but nothing was done to protect her son. (taken from NBC10.com)

"(School district CEO) Paul Vallas says there's zero tolerance? Well, that's wrong. It's incredibly wrong. We are expected to be daily tolerant, more than tolerant. We see children being hit. Children hitting each other, rolling around the room, throwing things, hardcover books, trash cans and threats. The constant threats and cursing, it goes on daily. Of course we have to tolerate it." Parents: Keep them home. Christian kids don't belong in public schools. They weren't born for the purpose of having to make use of bully hotlines and to tolerate four letter words all day (this starts in Kindergarten, by the way). Look, violence in public schools is on the rise. Of all places to raise your children, why there?

They're yours. You raise them. Don't throw an expectation of "salt and light" onto them before they are ready. You be salt and light to them now so that they are equipped to go out into the world as young adults and serve the Lord. Teach them logic, compassion, understanding. Educate them so they can stand confident in Christ and His word. Sharpen their minds; give them a quality learning experience. Yes, it's not easy. It takes time and commitment. Do it; you will be blessed by the One who has called you to obey Him.

I think the saddest thing in all of this is that so many parents think they have no options. What a sad, desperate place to be.

Having been a teacher before coming home, I cannot imagine teaching in that sort of environment. How much learning do they think is going on? How are children suppose to learn when they are terriffied to even be there? How can they possibly hope to instill a love of learning in such a hostile environment?

I know...I'm preaching to the choir here! I'll get down off my soapbox now. It's way too late to be up here anyway!

Oh, my, how many times I heard before we decided to homeschool that sending our son to p. school would allow him to be salt and light in the school. I did not then, and feel even more now, that it is as you said. Our children cannot be expected to be salt and light before they are capable.
It has been very discouraging to hear the kids around here, the way they talk to each other and to see the way they act. No, our son isn't perfect, but he doesn't have to be exposed to anything we don't want him to be. That is our responsibility, to protect him as long as we can and we plan on doing just that!

I am gonna start homeschooling my son this year and I will be refering to your site for encouragement often. This is the first time I have ever read anything on the magazine and it just amazes me! I could sit here and read all night! I will definately be stopping by everyday.
