It seems to take forever for some of my dishes to dry after I run the dishwasher, especially the plasticware. I don't want to take the time to hand dry them before I put them away and I don't have a lot of counter space for a drain rack. Leaving the door to the dishwasher door open in our home is a trip hazard.
To solve all of these obstacles... I put the drain rack in the cupboard under the kitchen sink. It is a large cabinet that didn't lend itself to storage of other items. Plus, it is right next to the dishwasher and convenient.
Before you unload the dishwasher, unload your hidden drain rack. Put away all of the dry dishes into their normal storage location and then put all of the 'not so dry' dishes into your hidden rack. Close the door and forget about them until the next load is done.
