The Experimental Zone ~ Free Light and Color Unit Study
1:00 AM, Jul. 26, 2006
Does it sound overwhelming to have more than one science topic or unit going at one time with your homeschool?
Sometimes, one topic leads to another and we may feel that taking on "one more thing" will pull us in too many different directions. However, diverting to an ancillary topic can provide additional depth, interest....and fun!
This week, as our family prepares to incorporate art and art history into our habitat units, we started a short unit on light and color.
When I mentioned the importance of understanding color and the color wheel to my 13 year old son, he asked, "What's a color wheel?"
Well! That was a definite sign that we needed to revisit light and color. And, what a perfect opportunity to make the edible color wheel listed below!
The color wheel is just one small part of the science of light and color. We have also been working through the activities in this (free!) unit study.
This week we are going to pair our new color mixing knowledge with the Japanese art of suminagashi to create ocean scenes. Our art activity will involve paint marbling with shaving cream and tempra paint. The activity can be found at this terrific art site.
![]() A Sweet Color Wheel
What youll need: 3 cans of white icing 1 bottle each of red, yellow, blue food coloring Box of vanilla wafers Plenty of spoons and bowls A large tray, plate or platter to display your color wheel Wet paper towel (this can get sticky!) Directions: 1. Open 1 can of icing and spoon equal amounts into three bowls. 2. Open the 2nd can and spoon 1/3 of the can into a fourth bowl. 3. Make 1 bowl of red, 1 bowl of blue and 2 bowls of yellow icing by adding drops of food coloring to each bowl and stirring well. Use generous amounts of food coloring to make the red very red, the yellow very yellow and the blue very blue! 4. Put a small amount of each primary color on 1 wafer. Place it on the plate for the beginning of your color wheel. 5. Decide who is going to mix the primary combinations of yellow and blue, yellow and red, red and blue. 6. Give each person a clean bowl to make their first mix. With a clean spoon, mix a little of each of your 2 primary colors to make the new secondary color. 7. Put a small amount of each secondary color on 1 wafer. Place it on the plate between the 2 primary colors used to make this color.
Here is where it can get confusing! Using clean spoons and a clean bowl, take a spoonful of 1 primary color and mix it with a spoonful of the secondary color you just made. You will do this 2 times, one for each of the primary colors you used in step 5. 9. You now have your tertiary colors. Put a small amount of each color on a wafer and place the wafer between the appropriate primary and secondary color! 10. What happens when you mix all 3 primary colors together? What happens when you mix a little of all of the colors together?
A Kool
.Aid Version ![]() You can also make a color wheel substituting powdered drink mix for the icing and cookies. You will want to purchase 4-5 packets of blue, yellow (lemonade) and red. You will need plenty of clear glasses, spoons and containers of wter. Mixa a glass of red, a glass of blue, and a few glasses of yellow drink. DO NOT follow package direcitons. Try using 1 cup of water to each packet. Then, add water if necessary. The objective is rich pirmary colors to start off the mixing!
(p.s. Preschoolers love "free form" mixing using many packets of powdered drink mix, large and small bowls of water, cups and spoons. I found this to be a great activity while older children are doing their own science lessons.)
Enjoy these activities and much more in the light and color unit study.
It's easy, fun and interesting to mix not only colors, but several areas of science with art!
