The Busy Woman ~ Two Absolutes
11:00 AM, Aug. 11, 2006
Hi My name is Susie Glennan. I'm the President of Busy Woman, Inc. and The Busy Woman's Daily Plannerฎ at www.thebusywoman.com. We help you get organized through Personality Based Time Management and learning to schedule yourself to success.
As you take time to plan for the back to school rush think of two absolutes you can schedule into your day. What are absolutes you ask? They are two things you and your children can look forward to each day, a focal point so to speak. When we rush through our day without something to focus on there comes a breaking point and before we know it, our body says, "ENOUGH!" That's why many collapse at the end of their day. So before back to school shopping and planning becomes rushing and aggravation, take a few moments with the family to discuss what needs to be done.
The most popular absolutes are lunch and dinner. Smart women have reading, TV, or bath time at the end of their day to help them rejuvenate. And for those of you who know me, "I just wish I could reach the end of the tub to even enjoy a bath." {smile} But seriously to give us calm in our chaos and healing time for our minds, we physically and mentally NEED absolutes in our day.
If you tell the children that at 12 O'clock they'll have lunch and then quiet time, this gives them a focal point. Have you ever had so much to do in your day that you're just waiting for the clock to strike 5 so you can go home from work? Or do you watch the clock later in the day when you know your husband is coming home and you just need a break? These overwhelming feelings can be avoided if you set parameters for the absolutes in your day.
It changes from watching the clock, to a conditioned response of knowing that 12 is lunchtime and 5 is another break. You know just as a matter of fact, "I can get through this because I know at 12, the kids eat and spend quiet time in their room." Or, "Steve comes home at 5 so I'll be fine." There is a real connection between brain and body when you tell yourself that you get a break. Having breaks at least two times a day is healthy and needed.
I remember when my children were little and I had those absolutes in my day. It actually helped me to be calmer during the chaos just knowing I had a break coming up.
After a few weeks, it becomes easier to settle into a routine that revolves around these absolutes that give your mind rest. But as always it takes careful planning to achieve this goal. So take it slow by only planning one absolute for 3 5 days and see how it goes. You might need to change the time. But chances are you know when your children need a nap or when they leave for school. Those are built in absolutes.
My absolutes used to be: Kids out the door by 6:30AM. Jump into shower for uninterrupted time. Work until 3, kids come home and we sit down for a snack and chat.
Let me know what absolutes you've planned for your day and give us a testimonial about how that helps your mind have healing time at
