The Experimental Zone ~ Leapin' Lizards!
1:00 AM, Aug. 23, 2006
For over a year, my daughter has been trying to catch a lizard. This past Sunday she succeeded in catching an eastern fence lizard.
It's amazing how some of the most memorable science lessons just happen! They aren't planned, and most likely, center on a topic that isn't in the "lesson plan" and is quite unexpected. Our spontaneous science unit for this week is reptiles and cold blooded animals. Part of me wished that this could have happened when we were studying desert habitats later in the year...wouldn't that have been perfect timing! But this was a learning opportunity we couldn't pass up. How much success would we have TRYING to find a lizard (in November, no less!).
I never was a critter person, and if you had told me seven years ago that I'd allow lizards and other creepy crawlies into our "homeschool", I would have said, "No way! If they want to see creatures, we'll visit the pet store or the petting room at the local science museum."
But, as our homeschooling style has evolved into an ecclectic/Charlotte Mason method, I understand... What better way to internalize the concept of cold blooded than by setting up ultra violet and infrared heat lamps over a reptile habiat and reading the thermometer in the habitat several times a day!
We have several rules for catching and keeping wildlife:
1. We can only keep the animal for 3 days. Please check your state's wildlife laws for
rules and regulations regarding the capture and maintenance of wildlife.
2. Expenses to set up and maintain the animal cannot exceed $10.
3. The child who catches the animal must be willing to maintain the proper food supply for
the animal.
4. We must research the animal and make sure we are providing the right environment
during its brief visit in our care.
Our first step was to make sure the lizard was warm. Over the last three years, we have accumulated just about everything needed to catch small critters. So, we placed her in the large aquarium with some sand and a heat lamp, while we gathered information.
Next, we researched the Internet. We also visited a large pet store with a wide variety of repitle supplies and read instructions and advice on some of the products.
![]() This is a summary of what we learned from our research:
- Lizards are cold blooded and need a heat source. UV lights and infrared heat lamps are
a good way to proivde the light and heat needed to aid in digestion and physical
activity. The cage should be kept around 80 degreen Fahrenheit.
We noticed heated rocks of various sizes and features at the pet store. Although they
looked "cool", we found out that they are not necessary for this type of lizard, and, in
fact, can burn the skin on the underbelly of the eastern fence lizrd.
- Various types of substrates can be used. Keep in mind that if you are keeping the lizard
for a long time, you'll need to wash the substrate in water or replace it. Plus, you'll want
a substrate that is a natural material, as sometimes part of the substrate may get
ingested when the lizard eats.
One website author said they used pea gravel just like the gravel used in aquariums, but
we felt a small piece by get ingested by the lizard, so we went with a natural bark
substrate sold at the pet store.
- It is easy to over feed reptiles. We discovered this with a toad we kept for 2 days last
spring. A small lizard will eat about 1, maybe 2, crickets every other day.
You can purchase crickets and keep them in their own habitat as you wait to feed them to
the lizard. In the past, we placed 5 crickets in a plastic shoebox (poke small holes in the
top) with some empty tissue tubes, oatmeal, and papertowel soaked in water.
- Lizards need humidity. They may not necessarily drink from a water "dish", but a live
plant (just a common household philodendron) helps provide moisture and humidity.
Also, mist the inside of the habitat 2 times a day with a light misting. We place a
humidity gauge in the cage and kept it at about 80%.
One other important reminder to our children when they are near any type of small animal....remember that to a small animal, they are a giant. When we get our face in close to them, all they see is a HUGE thing! This can be very frightening. As one certified wildlife rehabilitator once told us, a small animal could go into shock from being frightened like this.
Now that "Rainbow" the lizard is resting comfortably, we are enjoying the following websites, activities and books during our reptile week.
- We are going to make paintings of reptiles using bubble wrap and paint:
Cut bubble wrap the shape of a lizard. Using small paint rollers, roll paint on bubble wrap. Then, press a piece of paper over the painted bubble wrap to make a scaly lizard picture.
Books we checked out of our the library:
"Handbook of Lizards: Lizards of the United States and Canada" by Hobart M. Smith
Comstock Publishing Associates, Ithaca, NY, 1995 "About Reptiles: A Guide for Children" by Cathryn Sill, Peachtree Publishers, Atlanta, GA,
1999. (This is a very basic book, good ages 3-5.)
"Snakes, Salamanders and Lizards Take Along Guide" by Diane Burns, Northword Press,
1999.
"All About Lizards" Jim Aronsky, Scholastic, New York, 2004.
- I have given my son a list of questions to research:
Why do we need to provide a UVA light? What do UVA and UVB light provide
for the lizard?
What are some diseases tha affect lizards? Good sites for this
information:
(Note: This looked like a fun reptile related cake for the snake lover in your family who is celebrating a birthday....a snake cake!)
There are so many more lizard activities and books we could delve into this week...perhaps we will or......
Perhaps another unplanned science lesson is waiting just outside our back door!
See you next week on the Front Porch...where you'll find many unexpected learning opportunities!
