The Experimental Zone ~ Teaching Robotics

1:05 AM, Sep. 6, 2006

Several options exist for studying robotics with your family, or starting a robotics team or club/co-op. It truly depends on your budget and level of interest. You can opt to join or form a FIRST Lego League®  Team, purchase an all-inclusive kit, or use some online resources.

(Check out a free unit for pre-2nd grade listed at the end of this entry.)

Let's take a look at some of the options.

FIRST Lego League®

Dean Kamen is the founder of FIRST Robotics

®.  FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, a non-profit organization whose main goal is to make science and technology accessible, fun and educational for students.

You can read all about FIRST here.

A few basics about the program:

·         FIRST has several competition levels, depending on age.  Jr. FIRST Lego League (JFLL) for ages 6 to 9, FIRST Lego League, for ages 9 to 14, and FIRST Robotics for ages 15 to 18.

  • The competition season for JFLL and FLL is (roughly) between August and September.  The Challenge will be announced in mid-September

  • Each year the competition is centered on a theme.  This year's theme is nanotechnology.  In addition to this exciting topic, teams will also have the opportunity to use a new version of Legos  - Mindstorms NXT.  This year's teams have the option to use this new version or the previous Mindstorms RIS 2.0.

  • In mid-September  the FIRST organization will release this year's challenge.  A challenge consists of specific tasks on the competition table and guidelines for a research project.  Teams will then have anywhere from 8 to 10 weeks (possibly more, depending on when their regional and/or state tournament is held) to build and program a robot using Mindstorms or NXT to complete as many of the tasks as possible.

  • Each team is encouraged complete the research project component.  The research projects are an opportunity for the teams to understand real life robotic applications.  Plus, it is a way to show creativity.  The research project can be a skit, game show or even a comic book format!

  • Teams usually consist of 4 to 10 members (no more than 10).  We have had homeschool families enter our state tournament with just three team members.  If you do decide to go with a 1-2 family team, please check with your state FLL organization, especially if your total number is 4 or less.  You can contact the national FLL office to obtain state contact information.

Does a FIRST Lego League team sound exciting, yet you aren’t sure it’s right for your family at this time?

Oftentimes,  families who think they might one day want to put together a team, will organize a robotics co-op or club for a year or two prior to starting a formal FLL team.

When I was coaching, between seasons we continued as a robotics co-op and did a more in-depth  study of robotics and real-life applications (i.e. robots and space exploration).

If you have a child interested in the FIRST Lego League or robotics or  your family is interested in putting together a robotics club or you want to study robotics in your homeschool, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • If you are thinking of investing in a Lego Mindstorms® kit, the "older" version of Mindstorms® (RIS 2.0) may not be the "latest and greatest" Mindstorms® technology, but it is still a terrific learning tool.  They can still be purchased on eBay and through some retailers.

  • If you have a Mindstorms® 2.0 or NXT set and want to set up a "playing field" similar to those in the past FLL tournaments, check with previous teams to see if they are willing to sell or donate an old table set.  Many teams hold on to the old ones for a year or two.  The Mars theme from two years ago is a fun challenge.  A fair percentage of FLL teams are homeschool teams.  Check on local e-groups or through local homeschooling newsletters to see if there is a team in your area willing to sell a set from a previous year.

  • You don’t necessarily have to spend all of your “robotics” time building robots.  Investigating  practical applications for robotics can be very hands-on and fun!

Visit the research portion of the previous FIRST Lego challenges.  Study how robots are used in ocean exploration or to improve the everyday lives of people with a physical handicap.  The philosophy behind the research projects is to show students that robots are not just fun to build, but they perform valuable tasks and can help humans live and learn.

Also, activities like this Furby dissection  are a fun and memorable way to learn about sensors and gears.  (I bought our Furby via an online auction.)

  • In our co-op we spent seven months studying robots and space exploration.  We expanded to include rocketry and the International Space Station.  Other topics you could explore:

Robotics  in medical applications.

Robotics in manufacturing.

Robotics and disaster preparedness and recovery.

  • You don't need a full Mindstorms®  kit to do some robotics related activities.   You can use a Lego Battery Box (available either on eBay or Bricklink.com), Technic gears and pieces.  Then, utilize the free lesson plans found on the web (listed below).

This NASA site has some fun projects that don’t require a full Lego Mindstorms set.

  • Treasure Box Press has a semester long robotics curriculum that includes a Technic  set and battery box, along with complete lessons, and Student and Teacher guides.

    • You can opt for a robotics kit and curriculum such as the BOE Bot from Parallax® .  My son used this curriculum for two years and learned more advanced technical and  programming skills than those offered via Mindstorms 2.0.   If you have a child who is very interested in robotics or has spent several years using Mindstorms, the BOE Bot is  a challenging step up, which you can use without being a technical expert.  (If you opt for this, be sure you purchase the version with the “Robotics” curriculum workbook.)

      Online resources:

Here is a robotics unit I created with my young child (4 years old at the time.)

All we needed were some empty containers, glue and a variety of craft materials we had on hand!

Note:  If you are interested in exploring the topic of this year's FLL challenge - nano technology -check out these resources:

      •          How Stuff Works

        • A traveling nanotechnology museum exhibit, entitled "It's a Nano World" and website with some   information. The exhibit  is currently in at The Health Museum in Houston, but is ending September 10th.  This is the link to the  museum
