Tip of the Day ~ Homeschool Craft Planning

5:00 AM, Sep. 20, 2006

I’ve always been an artsy-fartsy type person.  I love doing crafts with the kids at home.  Some of my favorite crafts we have ever done have come from Family Fun magazine.  A couple of years ago around election time, we did some great patriotic crafts that I got from their website and a few of their saved magazines that I had marked with bookmarks for us to do when we had time.  I am going to be posting pictures of them on my blog later this week (they were part of our 2004-5 school year).  We had an election party and made patriotic decorations, costumes, foods, and such.

When I get a Family Fun in the mail, I take those little neon colored 3-M tab sticky stickers and mark the pages that I want to come back and do later.  Many of the crafts correspond with future unit studies I plan to do, and many are seasonal.  When I’m done with marking pages, I get on my computer and add the magazine to my “Family Fun Reference” list for later (done in MSWord).  I type the name of the magazine issue and date, and then I list the items with keywords so that I can easily search for them on my computer.  Here’s an example:

October 2001

From Sea to Shining Tee (flag T-shirts)

Fall Cookies

Bat Watching in Austin

Vacation/Travel: Time Traveling in Plymouth – Living History Museums

Black Bean Chili Recipe

Tortellini Vegetable Soup with Parmesan Diamond Biscuits Recipe

Pumpkin Recipes: Waffles, Toasted Seeds, Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting

This way, when I go into that document, I can SEARCH for “FALL” or “PUMPKIN” and it will show me all the crafts I marked to do later that have those words in it.  Then, when we are done with the craft, we highlight it yellow!  On the surface it seems like a lot of work, but really it is just a simple habit and since I use my computer a lot for blogging, worksheets, research, typing lessons (for kids), educational games and the internet for our unit studies, it is no trouble at all.

If you don’t subscribe to Family Fun’s Crafts, you can always go to their website and look up crafts by season or key-word also.

Here’s the link:  Family Fun Crafts

Take a look at some of their fall craft Ideas and get busy having some fun with your family creating things with your kids!

Great Idea!

4:45 PM, Sep. 22, 2006, posted by DonnaC
My dh is trying to declutter and has been working on a system of keeping whole magazines (since there were so many articles he wanted to refer back to) and how to store them, and actually use them in the future...

This is a great idea using Word, so thanks for the idea! I'll be passing it along to him!

Using Family Fun for homeschooling

Every month when I get my Family Fun magazine, I go through each page to determine if I want to refer back to that craft, idea, recipe, story, travel spot, etc. If I determine I want to refer back to it, I rip the corresponding pages out and keep them in their own files. I have a Thanksgiving File, a Christmas File, a Fourth of July file, an Easter file, a birthday party file, a games file, a Travel spots file, a craft file, a decorating file, a science experiments file, an outdoors file, even a Math and an English file. Then when my sons birthday is around the corner, we look through the birthday file together to determine what theme or game ideas he'd like to have for his party. When Fourth of July is coming up I peak at the file and see what craft ideas we could do based on what I have in the house and what we have time for. When it's fall and I want some fall outdoors ideas, I look in the Thanksgiving file and the outdoors file. We are just beginning our homeschool journey, so I'm sure this will be very handy in our homeschooling too. Just thought I'd share my organization ideas with you.
