Homeschooling Only One ~ Only Children on the Net

2:39 AM, Oct. 6, 2006

I have been doing a lot of Internet research the last several days on the subject of only children. Some of my findings will be posted here in later weeks. However, I thought I'd share some of the sites that I found for your own. hmm, amusement? I will say most are not Christian sites and I never saw anything about homeschooling in any of the sites.

By just putting "only children" in a Google search brings up a plethora of sites..

From the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Toni Falbo writes an article about "The Myths About Only Children".

http://utopia.utexas.edu/articles/opa/only_children.html?sec=parents&sub=preschool

USA Weekend had a Q&A for someone wondering if only children are lonely and has tips for rearing only children.

http://www.usaweekend.com/03_issues/030420/030420relationtips.html

New York Metro talks about only children in New York, which is more of an article proving that only children are spoiled. (Or maybe only New York City only children.. Sorry, my opinion!)

http://www.newyorkmetro.com/nymetro/urban/family/features/10290/

The BBC has a show called the Woman's Hour and they has a blurb about a Conference that was held the first part of this month: Only Child: A Unique Inheritance 2006" which encouraged adult only children to talk about their experiences. There's a link to listen.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/womanshour/02/2006_35_wed.shtml

The above had a link to a website entitled, "Being an Only". In 2004 BeingAnOnly was formed as a not for profit company, to offer resources and information for only children of all ages.

Ann Richardson, Director, is a counselor and psychotherapist. As an only child herself, she has run many workshops, over the past 10 years, for adult onlies. Encouraged by their success, she decided to extend the opportunities for only children to meet.

http://www.onlychild.icom43.net/index.html

I even found that there's a musical group called "The Only Children," but chose not to share that website. You can find it if you look.

Then there's an article entitled:  Siblings Help Children Get Along with Others in Kindergarten. Thankfully, there was the following quote to give us with only children (and had no choice in the matter) a modicum of hope in our lives. [grin, yup, that's my form of sarcasm]) "We wouldn't encourage parents to have a second child simply as a strategy for improving social skills. Our findings are consistent, but they are modest. There are other things that parents can do to improve an only child's social skills, short of having another child." This was on an Ohio State site.  http://researchnews.osu.edu/archive/socskill.htm

And on Find Articles.com, there's an article called: The `Little Emperors' Grow Up - psychology of only children - which was published in Psychology Today, in Jan, 2000 and written by Hong Guo, which details his study of the Chinese onlies since the one-child-per-family policy put in place 20 years ago.

http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1175/is_1_33/ai_58616817

And that's only on the first page!

Then there is an iVillage message board for those who are "raising an only child." A "MeetUp" site for those only children who want to meet up at the corner deli.

Adriean Mancillas, associate professor, Graduate Education and coordinator, School Counseling Program, has had her article, "Challenging the stereotypes about only children: A review of the literature and implications for practice" published in the summer issue of the Journal of Counseling & Development, which is the branch journal of the American Counseling Association (ACA). Posted on the California State University of Dominguez Hills website.

http://www.csudh.edu/univadv/dateline/facstaffnews/adrieanmancillas.htm

Add "famous" to "only children" in your Google search and you'll find the website Only Child.com, which looks like it might be a nice resource. This also produces several sites with lists of famous people who were only children. Amazingly enough, go to more than one site and the list is slightly different, so you're likely to get a few more names that way.

There's a whole lot out there!

Now add make that Google search: "only children homeschooling" and the first page brings up ten sites that discuss this in some form or fashion. Only one site gives an "interior page" and, believe it or not, it's my website: donnac.com Of the ten sites on Page 2, three of the ten contain info on homeschooling an only child.

So happy web surfing! You don't have to agree with all of the sites, but you can certainly find some sites out there about only children.

(As you are reading this, I should be recuperating from surgery done October 3rd. Your prayers are appreciated for a quick recovery! Thank you!)
