Home Where They Belong ~ The Most Dangerous Place in America

2:51 AM, Oct. 18, 2006

Should teachers be trained to deal with "terrorism in the classroom?" With the recent school shootings, violence from students to other students, and escalating anger coming (and directed to) from students and teachers alike (recently a teacher was in trouble for biting a student - another teacher charged for stapling a child's head), do teachers need to pack guns? Check out Utah this weekend. Public schools are not the safest place physically, and certainly not spiritually. Parents, keep them home where they belong. The odds are too high, time is only so short. Let's make it count by investing in our children rather than turning them over to a godless system to be made thinkers and workers for the state. Safety first.

You all may think I am crazy but I think that everyone should carry a gun. Then crime would go down and then maybe the government would serve us instead of us serving the government.

Oct. 14, 2006 - Thank God I am Homeschooled!!

That is very scary!! I have a friend who wishes her mom would homeschool her.
Last year there was a threat from a student at the local Highschool. My friend stayed home. It was really scary. You never think it would happen in your town!!

Thanks for keeping us posted on issues like these. I really enjoy reading your blog!!

Hope you are having a GREAT weekend!

Oct. 14, 2006 - Not only teachers

I was reading an article this morning about how a Texas school district is training everyone, students and teachers, to attack if a gunman comes into their school/classroom. Absolute craziness!

The article is here: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2003304148_defending14.html

One of the school districts here in Texas was on the news the other night. The Burleson ISD is training the students to fight back if anyone comes into their class with a gun. The students are all supposed to stand up and start throwing the heaviest things they can find at their attacker. Then rush him. The parents are worried about the school teaching violence, yet they still send them every day.

Maybe we should all stop going into banks - after all they get robbed, right? And how about airports? I heard some planes were once used as weapons... While we're at it, we'd better stay away from the playground, too - just yesterday, another kid pushed my son down. Pretty soon, you'll be holed up at home, looking distrustfully at anyone who ventures near. Now, THAT's enjoying life.

What happens when someone bombs a church? You stop going into them? Oh, wait, people have been bombing/burning churches for centuries... How alarmist can you get?

Oct. 16, 2006 - Untitled Comment

Anony, how alarmist can I get? You are correct: I am sounding an alarm. Public schools are no place for Christian kids. When I go into a bank, I take my children with me. When I go into church, or into a library, I take my children with me. As I live out my life, I take my children with me, always dialoguing, always teaching. They're mine, gifted by God, to raise up in the admonition of the Lord. I would no sooner drop my kids off all day at a public school than I would drop them off all day at the local strip joint. In some schools, the two are almost synonymous. Focus, Anony. Don't broadbrush. Just because I take seriously my children's education and spiritual/mental well-being, does not mean we "hole up" in our homes. In fact, 85% of their homeschooling happens apart from our home, did you know that? We're so busy living and learning life, school happens. Check out the stats, Anony - you can't deny the research. Homeschooled kids do better (up to 30 point higher) on their SATs then their public school counterparts. So....they're doing better academically, better as far as community leadership (ask yourself why public civil offices are welcoming homeschooled teens into volunteer programs. Ask yourself, too, why universities such as Stanford in Calif are actively recruiting homeschool grads at conferences where homeschoolers congregate). The stats don't lie. The outcome doesn't pretend. Keep them home where they belong (what is "home", Anony? Home is family). Their family is where they belong.

Oct. 16, 2006 - Homeschoolers are ALWAYS safe, right?

Let's see, you should ask this family http://www.theslant.net/storylight.php?story_id=3479&date=20040128

You should also ask Kara Beth Borden's parents, Oh wait you can't they're dead.

Andrea Yates was homeschooling her kids, ask her.

A homeschooled kid busted out my friend's car window the other night. Such upstanding citizens.

I can go on. Would you like me to.

Kim, stop embarrassing yourself, LOL. CBS caught a clue and dropped the anti-homeschool "news" segments because they found they fared badly by doing so. You are bringing up some random wacky homeschooling-gone-bad examples. Let's get serious - any "movement" is going to have its nutheads. But please, let's compare the public school violence/murders/abuse with homeschooling's. No contest, Kim. So your example is moot. Kim, bring yours home where they belong.

How come negative commenters are never brave enough to leave a name???? Anonymous's make me mad when they do that....it is cowardly.

Oct. 16, 2006 - Untitled Comment

As you noted, "any "movement" is going to have its nutheads." So how can you post random stories about random nutjobs wreaking havoc in schools, and point to them as definitive reasons why we shouldn't venture into public schools? Bad stuff happens EVERYWHERE. I agree, public schools can be a cesspool if parents don't know what children are up to and with whom they're spending their time, just as the *family living room* could if the parents aren't involved in their children's lives. I am highly active in my sons' classes - I know their teachers, I know their friends, I know which assignments are giving them trouble, and I know how they spend their time. My children are doing well in public school. Blossoming, even. So, no, the idea that they need to be kept at home in order to be protected (sheltered) or to become functioning members of society is ludicrous.

Please don't get me wrong, I admire your dedication to your family, but homeschooling is not for everyone. And some families (mine) are doing great in public schools. The key is for parents to be AWARE and INVOLVED, whether the children go to public, private, or homeschool.

P.S. My name is Leigh

Oct. 16, 2006 - Untitled Comment

Leigh, thanks for posting your name. :-)

Parents cannot be aware when they only see their children an hour or two each day. I'd love to share the talk I do with groups, with you. It's shocking what's really going on. Homeschool parents have the time and opportunity not only to KNOW their children (relationship is everything), but they can guard their children, yes, shelter them (this is a biblical principle). Keep them home, Leigh. It's the number one option that we have.

Home Where They Belong...

Just curious...why do non-homeschoolers use the Homeschoolblogger? Why come and read blogs about homeschooling if you do not homeschool? Just to bash on someone because you do not have anything better to do?

I love HSB, it is so helpful to me. Gena, I am like you, I take my kids with me everywhere. I enjoy being with them, I enjoy our time together, I enjoy learning together!! I want them to be safe and the safest place I know is at home - home where they belong!

Gena, thanks for the encouragement in HSB and TOS!!! What would we do without these two resources???

Keep them at home

I just wanted to say that my neice is living with us at this time and she is attending public B&M school. We live in a tiny town. The other day we saw aired on the news that she would be coming home a child had brought a gun to school. We ran out to get her. She said her school first wanted to lump them in one room. Good idea shoot them all at once. Sheesh Then decided on lock down. Which her specific teacher ignored. Said it was just a drill. Anyway they found the child and found out it wasnt a real gun , but it scared us all. Although Leigh is right in that we do not know what will happen as we are out and about in our day . At least though my children will be with me and not have to deal with any of that on their own. At least I know they are with me and wont be anywhere near a weapon. If we ever happen upon one of these type of people at least I can hold them and be there they wont have to face it alone.

Public Schools

12:11 PM, Oct. 18, 2006, posted by hdhsb
What some people perceive as over-zealous sheltering, others see as protection. I never let my pre-school aged children play in the front yard for fear they might run into the street and get struck by a car. Now they're older, but I still consider it my God-given duty to ensure they remain as safe as possible. We spent one year in the public school system. After observing first-hand the bullying, the cursing, the utter lack of supervision in the hallways, playground and cafeteria, I knew it didn't matter how involved I got with the school. It was never going to be enough. And as this was supposed to be one of the "best" schools in the state, I knew there was no point in looking anywhere else but to my own home. It's been 3 years since we decided to homeschool and I haven't regretted it once. I think if more parents spent more time at the schools their kids attend, not just in the classrooms, but in the "public" areas as well, they'd feel a lot less sure they're doing the best for their children.
