Special Needs Homeschooling ~ The Big, Big Web World of Special Needs Information

I have been web surfing special needs homeschooling sites exclusively for the past week. It is a homeschooling homework assignment that I gave myself. There are a few things that I have learned. I have been out of the special needs ‘jargon’ loop for a while and there are as many opinions are there are websites!

Reading all that information out there made me feel a bit dizzy, bleary eyed and overwhelmed. I found myself saying, “Wow, maybe I should try that, “ or “Wow, having that book would be nice,” or “Gee, only $525.00 for that special needs reading program.” I could have spent lots of money on attention grabbing materials for my son, or found the magic bullet that would have made my daughter a rocket scientist. All the information-all the ‘stuff’ to help us in the teaching of our special children! Does anyone else’s head swim after a while?

Well, I took a deep breath and walked away from the computer. As I passed through the kitchen, I saw the bread that my daughter had made-she read the recipe herself. My son who has ADHD sat practicing his guitar with intense concentration. I had to step over the Laura Ingalls Wilder books that our daughter is now reading on her own. Those are my two ‘special’ children.

When we started homeschooling ten years ago, we didn’t really know what we were getting into. We were not one of those families that researched homeschooling and the alternatives. We just knew that it was the right thing for our children. We were called by the Lord to homeschool, I am sure of it. There is no way that we could have done this on our own. I have used hints, suggestions and resources given by veteran homeschoolers-those with ‘special’ children and those with ‘special’ special children. But I have to remember not to compare and not to get discouraged when what worked for them doesn’t work for our family. There have been some good years and some not so good. We have tried things that haven’t worked, and things that have. Then there were the ideas that worked for just a while.

There is much out there and it is a bit overwhelming. Here are some good ones that I have found this week. If you already know about them, you know the great information and inspiration they offer-if not give them a try.

Remember to “Test everything and hold on to the good.” I Thessalonians 5:21 I think that it can apply to Special Needs websites, too ;o)

Jan is a homeschooling mom of two, who tries to keep her good sense of humor even on days when it is really had to do so. She feeds the son's dog, changes the daughter's cat's litter box and teaches a mean Algebra lesson! She still hasn't acquired the gift of bilocation-but she is working on it.
