I guess all of us have struggled with chores and chore charts at some time or another. We've successfully used the PEGS (Practical Encouragement and Guidance System) system for about a year now. We revise it occassionally to fit our needs. Presently we are not using the Rewards/Strikes (the green and red discs you see in the bottom picture) markers because we have the system tied to the kids allowance. 100% of your chores each week gets 100% of your allowance. 50% of your chores gets 50% of your allowance. You get the idea.
We liked this chart because it helps the children to be responsible for their own tasks as well as keeping track of those tasks. They must turn over their disk when their task is completed. If they do their task but don't turn over their disk then they do not get credit for a job being done. Our children do great with this as long as we are enforcing the chart. If all the kids do 100% of their chores for the week then we do something special as a family over the weekend. This helps to build our family's team spirit.
As you can see some of the kids colored their discs which the system allows and some of them did not. We still stress communication, attitude and behavior as the A,B,C discs stress but do so as we talk about the day at the end of each day. We also discuss who had the best "team spirit" of the day. And that person gets a special treat!
You can visit the PEGS system at the links below and read more about it. They have two different size charts for different size families. We could have done with the smaller one but my hubbie like the idea of the big one. Maybe bigger is better, huh??
