Here is my favorite book ....

The First Thanksgiving
by Linda Hayward
48 pp.
The story starts in England in 1620, when the Pilgrims are setting sail for far-off America, leaving behind friends and safe homes. The reasons for their journey, the trials they endure while at sea, and all of their amazing adventures are detailed in this easy-to-read book.

Available in the "Thanksgiving Day Readers Pack" through SeeSaw Book Club.
Also available from the Scholastic Teacher Store.

We like reading Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving by Eric Metaxas to our children.

We also like Cranberry Thanksgiving by Wende and Harry Devlin. It is a favorite children's story that we read each year for Five In A Row!!

And although it isn't a Thanksgiving story, I always find myself wanting to read Warm As Wool by Scott Russell Sanders to my children at this time of year. It is also a Five In A Row book.

For myself, the only book that keeps coming to mind isn't a Thanksgiving book, either. But reading Pocketful of Pinecones by Karen Andreola always makes me very thankful. I love its focus on family, contentment, and thankfulness. :-)

My Favourite Thanksgiving Book

My Favoutite book about all things Thanksgiving has got to be the following:
Turkeys, Pilgrims, and Indian Corn : The Story of the Thanksgiving Symbols
Written by: Edna Barth
Ilustrated by: Ursula Arndt

It has taught us so much about the behind the scenes things surrounding the holiday. For example, did you know that for a time, Canada and the U.S. shared exactly the same day for celebrations? Canada then changed the Thursday to a Monday so we could have a long weekend ( gotta love sleepin in! ). In 1931, an executive decision was made that November was way past harvest time for us Canucks, so the second Monday in October was set in stone for our Thanksgiving.

Did you also know that the Pilgrims left wills and lists of their belongings that were discovered long after they were gone from this life, yet not a single one of them listed even ONE buckle? Not for a hat, a belt or a dress ... funny the things we assume over the years!

I highly recommend this fun and informative book for your Holiday collection ( and not just because she mentions Canadians :) )

I really like A light Kindled a story about Priscilla Mullins. It is a vision forum book by Tracy Leininger. We also like Thanksgiving, a Harvest Celebration by Julie Stiegemeyer. The illustrations are beautiful.

Our Favourite Book

By far, our favourite book about giving thanks is Bagels From Benny, written by Aubrey Davis and Illustrated by Dusan Petricic. This story warms our hearts (and brings tears to my eyes) without fail. We read it first with our Come Sit By Me studies, and now it is a regular staple in our home. Benny, in the story learns the best way to thank God for something is not to give the gifts He gives us back to Him in kind, but to help our fellow man to give thanks to God as well. It is simply beautiful, and incredibly powerful. Please go read it, and buy a copy for someone you love!

Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen

7:43 PM, Nov. 18, 2006, posted by
Written by O. Henry, this short story is about two men who have an annual Thanksgiving tradition. For nine years, Stuffy and the Old Gentleman had dined together. While Stuffy ate, the Old Gentlemen watched with "giving-pleasure". After the meal, they parted ways. Upon rounding a corner, Stuffy fell over and had to be carried away by an ambulance. He had overeaten. The ambulance drivers said it was a shame his problem was too much food when the Old Gentlemen they had just picked up had fallen over from near starvation.
