I wrote this last year, but thought it worth mentioning again.
For years I didn't have a tree skirt. It was a bit pathetic really. Some years I didn't use anything, other years and old sheet, some years a piece a fiber fill from quilting. I wanted a nice tree skirt but I didn't want to spend the money on one. I thought about quilting one but then the effort and time it would have taken overwhelmed me. Then I saw a great idea in the Family Fun magazine. I bought a large piece of felt and cut it to the right shape. Then I bought white felt sheets and cut ornament shapes out of them and with silver puffy glittery paint I decorated it and put the year on it. I then put the girls hands in the white paint to get a hand print on the skirt. Under each hand I wrote their names. Each year when I get the skirt out the girls rush to it and put their hands on the previous years to see how they have grown. They love it and I do too as I have a record of their physical growth. I'm sure that by the time they are grown the skirt will be full of hand prints. I hope to someday put a nice little ribbon border around the skirt to dress it up. When the girls have started their own families I will continue using this skirt so that I can remember when our house was full of little girls each Christmas.
The Family Fun link above will take you to the webpage with the full instructions on how to make this skirt. I hope this might start a new tradition for you.
Merry Christmas! Susan

I am going to have to do this. What a great way to make a family heirloom to look back at when each child has grown : )
